ADHD Life lessons I wish someone told me after getting diagnosed 31/50

If you have ADHD you will often have a way harder time quitting bad habits like fast food or phone use because they engage your brain in dopamine cycles that are difficult to get out of. You soon find yourself not just enjoying but needing these things which is when your relationships begin to suffer and It can feel like the more you try to quit, the more you actually focus on and crave that thing, leading you feeling stuck and powerless.

This is when I learned about the power of habit substitution and how it can work for adhd. I realized that, my brain makes it very difficult to say no which is why I fighting any bad habit only works by replacing them with **something similar but not as damaging.** For example, instead of ordering fast food, I now try to order sushi instead, rather than checking my phone right after waking up I now go for a walk or run instead. which has led to this weird phenomenon of not missing my old ways at all, while creating a new normal I can be proud of.

Not missing old ways further proves we ADHD peeps are stuck and not lazy. We don't want to continue doing things that make us and others unhappy ... we just get too fixated on them!
Love your videos 💕

I'm going to open up for the first time about this, I feel like this is a safe and understanding area of this platform, I made so many mistakes trying to run away from my bad habits and made some very extreme decisions out of a feeling of desperation while trying to escape my addictions, I came SO close to killing myself before I learned I had ADHD and learned I could replace my bad habits rather than run from them, and I'm finally healing, being open about how I feel and they ways I'm struggling helps me to heal and make noticeable progress, thank you so much for the effort you've put into this channel and into helping people, I doubt I'm the only person you've saved by sharing this information ❤

I am so ADHD. This video is so me. Now I can work on replacing these bad habits with better bad habits.

The bad habits — or even addictions — are also hard to quit because my brain is “now” and “not now”. Making sacrifices for long-term wellbeing is almost impossible, even as I see the consequences adding up over time. Thanks for the video. ❤

So many of your videos contain good advice for anyone, not just those with ADHD.

So true, have an "instead" plan, it doesn't have to be a big change, even a small alternative that interrupts the habit/cycle. Very good lesson

It's really just about rituals that are reliable, because we know what to expect from the experience, we are comfortable with it and we are pretty much just hunting for grains of dopamine.
Also, the more I find myself doing something I've formed a habit around, such as doom scrolling on social media, the more I HATE it! Definitely not becoming something I like or want more!
I become more self aware and hate that I can't stop, even as I curse myself for doing it and repeating to myself "I gotta stop!" over and over, I still find it hard to stop.
I feel like there's going to be something I stumble upon that will feel satisfying and "worth it", but that never happens and never will.
Welcome to ADHD, where your life is just starving for something you can never have!

Thank you for your videos.
I just ordered a wristwatch so instead of phone I use that for tracking time. Most of the cases I bring the phone with me just for telling the time but get distracted by the apps on it. No phone, no apps, no distraction.

One thing I learned from this channel is that ADHD is much easier to handle when you are fabulously wealthy.

I find your posts really helpful, and I want to thank you for all the effort you put intoaking them! I really appreciate it. Idk if it's normal, but my very recent réalisation, at 55, that ADHD has been with me all my life, and everything it has lead me to do feels very overwhelming at the moment. So, until the diagnosis is official in 2 months, I do what I do best... I binge on videos and lessons about ADHD... You're doing a great job🦋🙏

In a similar way to ASD, we crave routine, when we struggle with life, we can lean into into it. It's really worth the time and effort it takes to create strong, rigid routines.
Even if at first these aren't the strong healthy routines, it doesn't matter. The fact that you've established some strong ones, they'll help, guide, and support you through the day. Once you've established them and have the strength to make changes, go gently. Introduce slight and positive changes. One at a time, each step will feel empowering, grounding, and invigorating.
