3 Common New Nurse Struggles

Being a new nurse is hard, and many new nurses get overwhelmed during the transition from nursing student to new nurse. In this video, I'll give three common struggles that new nurses face.

🟣Nursing Resume Templates and Job Guide🟣

1. Exhaustion. One common struggle that new nurses face is exhaustion. After graduation, there is an onslaught of work. First, you have to actually graduate. Next, you have to study and pass NCLEX. Finally, you have to being orientation. The whole process for a new nurse graduation can be overwhelming.

2. Anxiety. New nurses can become very emotional and filled with all sorts of anxiety. You can begin to worry that you'll make a medical blunder and harm a patient. You might worry that you're going to forget basic skills or concepts that you learned in nursing school. You might also fear talking to doctors.

3. Feeling that nursing is too hard (feeling inadequate to meet the demands of the nursing profession). It can be very hard learning to document efficiently, performing nursing skills quickly, monitoring and assessing patients, admitting and discharging patients, etc.

All of this abrupt change can lead to disillusionment for new nurses, and some even question whether they can keep up with the work.

However, the good news is that these are all normal things that most all new nurses go through. I went through them myself, and this video offers some tips and encouragement for those of you who are struggling.

I've just finished my first 6 months off orientation! Can't believe how much I've learned. I had SO much anxiety the first few weeks on my own, and now I start my shifts feeling confident in my ability to care for my patients. Thankfully, I have an awesome team I can go to with all my questions and concerns. That makes a huge difference!

Nursing school and learning how to be an RN is like learning how to walk. It's freaking hard. Which foot goes first? How many centimeters does the foot go forward? What happens if something is in the way? Is elevation needed? walking is so hard lol (great video!)

Wow you hit the nail on the head for me. This honestly could not have come at a better time. This is my second week working as an RN and we had an absolutely CRAZY day. Thank you so much for this video. It helps to know I’m not the only new nurse that feels super overwhelmed.

Thank you for addressing these common fears that goodness knows I'm already experiencing even though I haven't taken my NCLEX yet! I'm scheduled to take my NCLEX in a few days, the anxiety is real lol.

Omg transitioning from cna to rn is so different! I'm currently on nursing orientation and I'm always exhausted after work even though I was doing more manual labor as a cna. Time management is killing me right now. And I feel like I don't know anything at all! Like I don't know what I don't know! 😭😭

Wow! Thank you for the kind words. I wasnt feeling much anxiety until I made a couple mistakes on my own. Then I really started to question myself and doubt myself! Luckily, my preceptor was there to correct me this time but I'm starting on my own tonight and the anxiety has peaked! But I will do as you say and ask for help when I need it and not beat myself up for little mistakes.
