Its popular because its "circular".

The home chord the Root, provides a basic starting point. Then the 5th, or dominant, provides the most natural jumping point. The minor 6th, also the natural minor of the same key, provide natural tension from the major and dominant chords. Then the major 4th, from the 6th provides the tonal direction which sends us back to home. Its the most basic cookie cutter progression that our ears just love the most.
