Casting Bo Burnham might have been the best decision in a movie full of incredible writing, stylizing, and filmmaking. There's something about his real-life personality, the snap-judgement likability we've all developed for him, that made this twist hit so hard. We're like Cassie -- we've seen him grow up, we've watched him since he was a teenager on Youtube, we consider him to be an earnestly good guy. The mixture of that context with Bo's performance -- god, the self-interest in this scene is painful -- makes the third act of this movie really soar.

The fact that he doesn't apologize, he just demands to be forgiven.

He begs and gets all small asking for forgiveness but once she tells him “no” he has to call her a failure. What a absolute coward.

And then he goes to Al’s wedding despite knowing everything…

Truly speaks to who he really is.

notice how he says “you gotta forgive me” instead of saying “i’m sorry”

"I can't begin to tell you how much I've thought about it." The cold brutality of that line is so good.

It's so sad that this is how it went. When people learn to be better because that's what's expected and not because they took responsibility. You see the difference between the lawyer begging forgiveness and truly feeling sorry for his part, while Ryan just demands it because he was "just a kid"

This is actually really sad cuz this was someone who made Cassie hella happy and enjoy life for the first time in a long time. She really cared for and trusted him something that’s VERY difficult for her to do and for her to find out that all along he lied to her about his knowledge of what Al did and has proven he’s not who she thought he was is hella heartbreaking!

I don’t think I’ve ever been more disappointed in a character 😔.
I was really rooting for Ryan but he turned out to be just as bad as the rest of them. Scary thing is…he thought he was a good guy!

i knew from the beginning that he must've been involved because who tf will stay friends with people like that unless they share the same traits

the title of this video implies it is comedian bo burnham himself who got caught and not the character he is playing

The fact that he dont apologise but demands to be forgiven.
The fact that when she resufes he antagonises her and trying to blame her for whatever she may have done.
The freaking drawing form a kid thanking him on a wall...

Every scene in this movie is masterpiece...

This was SUCH an amazing bait and switch. I fell for their story line so hard and it made his betrayal so much worse

I like how Ryan's cowardice extends to every decision he makes. He has no loyalty to Cassie, whom he turns on as soon as it's clear she has no interest in him. He has no loyalty to strangers, as he opts not to speak up about the rape at any point in his life. He has no loyalty to his friends, whom he sells out immediately when his career is threatened. He has no loyalty to the truth, as he opts not to tell the cops about where Cassie is, seemingly hoping that she's been killed, and, therefore, that the tape will have died with her. He is a perfectly selfish invertebrate. His decisions are passive, the easiest thing to do in any situation. It's easier not to report the rape, easier to lie, easier to sell out his friends. It reflects the ease with which men ignore the behavior of their friends and colleagues, how the transgressions of a minority of rapists get supported by the majority of people at large, men and women alike. The culture exists to keep men like Al safe from accountability, with a million Ryans refusing to rock the boat.

This last third of the movie is both so beautifully done, and devastating beyond comprehension.

I love Carey Mulligan in this. She deserved the Oscar.

I wish Bo would do more roles like this. He was great in this movie.

If ONLY Ryan would have admitted that he's wrong and being a bystander is just as complicit as the perpetrator, Cassie might forgive him even for a slight. Smh. But hey, it's a movie.

I freaking love when he asks her for forgiveness the way she says just no. No hesitation. Like really? No.
