Talk about A MEAN GIRL... I'll be over here using part (or full?) brain power (I have no idea what the hell that video game analogy was) while SOAKING in McCarthy with the cool kids.

You've reaffirmed my decision to never read Girl on the Train. A 28 min video from you is a delightful way to wind down after a long day of travel in a snow storm.

Just stumbled upon this and realized I was tagged. Now I have to actually put some thought into my own tag. Never heard of sensitivity readers before (most of what I read doesn’t require/need them) so I’ll have to learn more about before I respond to your awesome rant. Great video!

The first major Steve Rants video of 2018, which are always fun to watch.

Awesome rants!
On sensitivity readers: I don't know where I stand. I can see where the trend leads to censorship and extortion, but I also see where the trend can lead to better books in the critique/ beta reader/ editing phases.

It's good to know the rants continue into 2018. Happy New Year, Steve!

I completely agree with you about the ending of the Harris book.

Interesting observations on the brain’s response when reading. Timely for me as I’ve just finished “the girl with all the gifts” which read as an action packed movie script only to then read the authors notes where he states he wrote the film screen play alongside. And yes I got a thrill reading but in a different way to my more literary reads. Was conscious of that for the first time, thanks for explaining why. I totally agree re book censorship; will be reach a stage I wonder where publishers will put a end piece that you have been affected in any way by the events described in this book then please contact such and such have that for TV programmes on the BBC don’t like censorship for existing works of fiction either, I certainly do not feel damaged now in my 50s having been brought up on a steady book diet of Enid Blyton in my childhood. We shouldn’t try and censure out history.

Girl on the Train? Never hear of it.

I want to be a "crappy endings" or "talking potatoes as characters" sensitivity reader. That sounds like a calling right there.

All kinds of love for your answers today, with extra points for quoting Buffy.
Oh yes, total agreement about the book covers (I have one on its way from the UK right now) and sensitivity readers- wow there's a subject to raise the old blood pressure.

I have to admit my day is not complete without a Steve rant.

The helpless protagonist! You’re response is so funny 😂 why shouldn’t a drunk be able have adventure? I appreciate what you’re saying though. Lack of confidence is often very frustrating to those who are confident and self aware (some characteristics you might share?) some times these types of character irritate me because I wouldn’t react the way they do but I have empathy for those who genuinely struggle with confidence and that is relatable. I loved Leto and everything you said is so true. Authors quoting themselves 🙄😂
That is such a good point about camouflage covers! This has happened recently with Days without end and they’ve actually altered the cover ever so slightly to include shadow of two guys.Good censorship rant though I enjoyed it a lot 🙌

When you said helpless character I immediatly thought about Jude um A Little Life, but I know you liked that book. Don't you consider this character helpless?

I take exception! I was raised to believe that Noah DIDN'T put the brontosaurus on the ark, or they'd have survived...🙄.
I lack the patience (faith?) for young-earth creationist "scholarship" these days.

You know it's a good rant, when Steve Donoghue gets triggered, LOL!
