I believe scholars and thinkers in the West need to sit with scholars of the ancient Indian texts and instead of assuming these stories were fantasy, 'pretend' even if for a little while, these are real stories, with historical significance.
If we approached these ancient writings as historical accounts, i believe humanity as a whole would benefit.

I think the reason must be a massive Earthquake extending from Himalaya foothills all the way to Arabian Sea and the region between Saraswati and Sindhu river. This earthquake sucked city of Dwarka into the sea, diverted flow of water of Saraswati and may have brought down all the 1, 000 cities, towns and villages spread between the Saraswati and Sindhu, thus creating the Thar desert. Those left alive must have migrated to new areas due to absence of water.

changing the direction of rivers was a wellknown tactics of invading Arians against the invaded cities like babylon (by persian arians and cyrus).
