I was tuning in a Sony PVM 1953MD CRT recently. It had a lot of extra High Frequency noise coming from the monitor. In this video I go through a couple steps on how I reduced the CRT noise and discuss what makes CRTs so noisy in the first place. Thanks for watching.

There was a store I didn't like to go in as a child because of CRT squeal... My Mother barely heard it.

My friends and I were playing Melee on CRT. They said that they heard a noise, though at the moment I couldn't understand what they were meaning. At about 4:15 I could he the frequency, so I guess it's different on different model CRT Tv's. Nice video Steve!!

I can tell you one thing Steve, those sounds use to drive me bonkers! Sometimes I would have to leave the room and get some fresh air because on that annoying sounds they made. Believe me bro, I don't miss those days on classic CRT units that's for sure. 8^(

But of course, we have great fella like you to help take care of the problem. Thank you bro. 8^)

If only I knew how to solder, great info Steve! Getting back into these TV's reminded me how that noise can be a bother. I think some adjusting needs to be kept in mind if hearing these things has not happened in years. When I'm gaming I never notice it anymore.

For some reason the sound a crt make is very comforting to me. I am autistic and have some auditory sensitivity, though I'm not sure if I hear it better than others or not. But sometimes I hook up the old hello kitty mini tv with my ps1 and go back to the time when I'd hear it almost every day. Its weirdly comforting

Today I learned that the high-pitched squealing from TV back in the day wasn't because that's how all CRT TVs sounds like, it's because it'd old! Now I have tinnitus with the exact same frequency as that CRT TV. I wonder if the TV caused the tinnitus over the years or if the tinnitus was amplifying the TV's noise.

That high pitched noise can also come from deflection yoke that's working at 15, 5 kHz

This is now the frequency of the tinnitus I developed almost 2 weeks ago. The 90s will never leave me now

I never really really knew what specifically caused it. I just basically thought it was a build up of things making it because its old technology. Thanks for the info on it!

Thanks for this. I have my Sony Trinitron open right now and it is a squealer! Going to try these repairs and see what I get.

Awesome stuff. I've been very lucky with my CRT tvs over the years. I hadn't experienced anything like this until a recent Panasonic Quintrix pickup.

tip: most headphones will completely get rid of this noise, even ones without active noise cancelling
however some older CRTs output this noise through the headphone output

I had a trinitron flatscreen consumer tv, the case was picking up noise and creating a feedback loop, like harmonics on a guitar. The flyback bolted directly to the case. I put some soft foam washers between the flyback and the case, solved the problem.

I've never heard it out of a CRT computer monitor, but that could be because perhaps by the time I was born the ones that made the noise were being phased out? I've always heard it from TVs, though, and I can still hear the frequency clearly at 32 now. I've always hated this sound, and was happy to take the trade-offs from early LCD panels for televisions.

I remember the noise when i was a kid. you could hear the tv was running a few rooms away, even when it was silent. Now i can barely hear it (in this vid)
