I think that in the first map, the smog from the volcano moved north and spread out due to wind.
The smog covering the sun caused all life to die, making the land uninhabitable.

The "Gates of Alexander " is an actual story from "Alexander's Romance" where he and the Greeks built a giant barrier wall in the caucasus to keep out the Gog and Magog who have been depicted as man eating giants in many medieval illustrations.
