One religious group overwhelmingly thinks atheists can't be moral: Evangelical Christians. Most Americans disagree.

4% of atheists either misunderstood the question or have very bizarre views. Lol

40% is still such a big percentage of all Americans…

There is a lady that asks for money outside of my local rite aid. I gave her money and she said she wanted to pray with me. I told her that's okay I'm atheist. She looked at me in pure confusion and said "Why did you help me then?" Um you're a person in need. She cried. Still asks me to pray all the time though.

41% of americans think i literally can not have morals? Thats insane

As a German I was surprised that he pronounced „ONLY 2 people out of 5“ think you have to believe in god in order to be moral.
I never had to deal with even the idea that I would be immoral for being atheist. On the contrary, there were more than enough discussions about how believers are immoral because of the actions of their churches.

I was volunteering in a refugee crisis, most of them muslim arrived with a car full of aid to a group of refugees that were gonna spend night outside, one guy asked me through a translator what religion i was, i said no one, and he looked at me with a supersurprised face. After he left translator confessed me he also didnt have religion.

Let me just state this openly and clearly... if an ancient book of dubious and outmoded fables is the ONLY thing keeping you good, moral and ethical... something is VERY wrong with you.

So only tens of millions of people think I have to believe in god to be moral. Interesting. Sounds fair

2/5 or 4/10 is still a decent amount of people

I have a funny alternate take on the 4% of atheists number. I wouldn't put it past 1/25 atheists to get pedantic about things and to say that it would take a belief in god to define "good" morals and "good" values in absolute terms.

I think because they're evangelical christian, they think that they're justified in whatever they think and say. I just don't trust anyone that HAS to be moral as a rule.

I'm sorry, I always mentally auto correct "evangelicals" to "evil testicles." I don't know why, but it does make it funnier

The funniest of things for me is people saying you need God to be moral, when our modern morality doesn't even come from the bible nor from religious sources.
The very formation of republics like the US was opposed by the church, the bible allows slavery, our legal system has nothing to do with religion, and most of us are more likely to consider moral or immoral the same things regardless of our religion, in fact, laws influence our perception of morality more than religion.
Yet, you see people assuring that only their religion gives meaning to be moral, ignoring that fact that if that was true countries like China wouldn't even exist.

I never got that, it just makes no sense. A well adjusted human being with a conscience knows right from wrong because you know pain isnt good, you dont want your shit to be stolen, and would prefer not to be murdered, so with a bit of logic, a well adjusted person knows that to do those things to another person is wrong. You can have empathy without a God.

Wanna point out the obvious here.

Polls like this can have their results skewed simply by polling in certain areas of the country.

A Southern Baptist, is going to be more conservative than a New England Baptist, on average.

A Hindi person who is from India and moved to the US, will have more traditional views than a Hindi Person who was born and raised in the US.

Funnily enough, poll results being skewed is something of a sport in politics, to see who can psych out the other party better by faking better poll results.

Example: The Clinton/Trump poll that showed Clinton in the lead by a huge margin, was skewed by polling people in largely blue voting areas, and excluding conservative voting zones.

I’d be very curious to see this poll done by region.

Because I have a feeling that in certain parts of the country, this number is going to be significantly higher among almost all categories, and maybe in some regions it will be lower.

I would like to see the wording that the survey used.

I am thrilled to hear that 60% of Americans think it’s possible for me to be a good person. Equally thrilling were the stats that a whopping 60% of Americans are NOT young earth creationists, and a HUGE 53% of Americans say they will ‘definitely not’ vote for Trump in 2024.

Or maybe we should raise the bar a little?

I think if the question "Is it necessary to believe in God to be a moral person" was asked in Sweden, people would be like "Huh..?" Like "What kind of question is that? Why would you believe that just because someone believe in some deity they're moral people? That's just odd."
To me it's baffling to see that 41 % of Americans think that only those who believe in a god (and probably just their god of choice...) are capable to make moral decisions and be moral people.
Who do they think atheists are?
