It's the Texas heat, some of us may not believe in God, but all of us believe in hell.

In germany, I'm pretty sure it's about 50% or close to that. I am shocked that the USA is SO Christian. I thought thy were a small majority and just extremely loud

In the Netherlands we would consider Portland a pretty religious city.

For those surprised in the comments it is so low throughout the US, you have to remember the generational differences. Among Millennials, up to 37% claim no religion, and in Gen Z the % that claim religions other than Christian has risen (more Buddhists, more Muslims, only slightly lower Jews, though many fewer Hindus). Still, over 1/3 of Gen Z aren't religious.
If these statistics were only done on people under 65, the % non-religious would double in much of the US, and go up 10-15% in other places.
I remember studying these numbers, as they were, in like 2004 when I was a teen. The decrease in religiosity since then has been honestly pretty insane.

People of Oregon have to deal with monsters of Gravity Falls and, so, they gave up on God

As a teenager in Portland, I've only met a couple people my age who are religious

Hello from Portland. The Portland Metro area stretches over 5 counties in Oregon and 2 counties in Washington, so it's a pretty broad area. And atheists and agnostics are not just in the big city. According to a study released by the Glenmary Research Center in 2003, Benton County, a county outside of the Portland Metro area, was the least religious county in the United States. I have seen articles from religious writers that proposed that the natural beauty of our state distracts people from religion, and causes us to seek the "physical pleasures of our natural world". Others have argued that the reputation we have as a non-religious state makes us a destination for non-religious people looking to move, which creates a feedback loop that reduces religiosity over time.

A lot of people in America also identify as christian but don’t go to church, pray, or read the bible. Its mostly just “I believe in god”.

I'm from the Czech Republic, we have over 75% atheists over here. Every US State's numbers sound like from the middle ages to me

I’ve lived all over Oregon, and I can say that the people who are religious are typically very laid back about it. Most people when I ask the question it’s just that they classify themselves as spiritual. Not affiliated

Atheist Englishman here who lived in Georgia for a year. On every street corner there were 2 things guaranteed to be there: a Baptist church and a waffle house.

Loved my time there, but now and then it felt like Gilead.

Edit: oh and I remember something hilarious someone said to me:
“If we’re in the Bible Belt then, brother, Georgia is the BUCKLE.”

So much lower than it feels like. Especially in Texas.

Portland used to be pretty Catholic when the state was still under the timber industry. Most of the reason Oregon is they way it is, is from class colonialism from other states

Where I'm from, those would be the numbers for the religious folks, not the atheists.

I was interested in seeing Hawaii or Alaska. they seem to gloss over them...

I read that in 2019 36% believed in god in Sweden. Don't know how they got the numbers but it makes sense. When I grew up in semi rural Sweden I hardly knew any religious people at all.

My family moved from Utah to Oregon when I was a kid. Met my first atheist the first week of school and was shocked by how much nicer she was than the Mormon kids I had known my whole life. Fast forward 30 years, I'm happily an atheist myself.

I'd have my faith seriously tested too if I had to live in Portland
