Always happy to see Lake Mungo getting mentioned. Such a unique film. I've only ever seen it once and yet so much of it is basically burned into my brain. If I was to add anything to this list it would easily be Noroi (2005), that's another one that's stuck with me over the years.

I also recommend:
1. The Sacrament - based on the Jonestown massacre
2. VHS - quality varies but fun and creative anthology
3. As Above So Below - unique premise and only film ever shot in the Paris catacombs
4. Cloverfield (one of the most well known found footage films)

I've got three recommendations that they didn't bring up in this video

The Tunnel (2011) - a mockumentary about journalists in Sydney who break in to the abandoned railway system beneath the city to capture footage for a story.
A great slow burn horror story that once it decides to ramp things up it kept me frozen in fear. There's a particular moment in this film that kept me up for weeks after I had seen it.

Noroi: The Curse (2005) - a Japanese found footage film about a paranormal journalist who went missing while working on his most recent documentary piece.
This one feels like watching a mystery unravel in front of your eyes, and I think the horror for me really comes from this place of watching innocent people learning that something beyond their understanding can not only exist, but can also be purely evil.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) - another mockumentary about a serial killer who left behind a vast collection of tapes detailing his crimes.
I've told people this is my favorite found footage film, and I can still stand by it, though it's definitely not for everyone. I think it really does a good job being more of a mockumentary than most others, to the point where by the end of the film you almost worry about whether or not what you just watched was actually real. It's dark and sadistic, bizarre and off-putting, and I wouldn't recommend it if very real depictions of abuse and torture are too much for you.

Lake Mungo was creepy but by the end of it i became so inexplicably sad. Even just thinking about it makes me depressed. It's a movie about learning how to cope with grief and the loss of a loved one. It also hits the same depressing note as the movie Relic (2020) that's about dealing with seeing your parents go through alzheimers or dementia. Sometimes the most horrific things are the most realistic and tragic ones.

Lake Mungo is one of my all-time favorite films. The cell phone scene is terrifying, but to me, the most chilling part of the film is the end credits. Absolutely haunting.

Oh man.. I absolutely love Creep to death. I found it randomly on Netflix, and now it's one of my all-time fav horror flicks. I honestly can't wait for Creep 3 to come out (yes, it's confirmed to be in the making)

Yeah, that moment in The Bay where the woman is in the middle of the street crying for someone to take her to a hospital works perfectly in the style of a found footage movie, because it is the exact way I could see that woman reacting to having a medical emergency like that in a public place. Could easily see my own mother reacting in that same way, which makes the film hit people closer to home with how realistic it depicts unnerving situations.

I was about to be a senior in High School when Blair Witch came out. It by word of mouth "IRL" "went viral" and was a really fun thing that happened, one of the last fun pre high speed internet and 9/11 wholesome memories. Excited for the new Creep Cast podcast, two brilliant talents and skills of Wendigoon and Papa Meat

There's a lot of great reasons to love Mungo. My favorite Mungo fact is that the director went out of his way to use completely unknown actors, who happen to also be absolutely incredible, so that when you looked up their names online there wouldn't be any evidence that they were anything but real people. I was able to trick my wife into thinking the entire thing was real until the climax.

Not necessarily a horror movie by conventional means, but my favorite found footage movie is definitely Troll Hunter.

Movies like be my cat, are an actual form of horror in my opinion, making the viewer uncomfortable is a form of art

I thought I was an outsider watching this video until they talked about incantation. I group this movie with “As Above: So Below” and “The Pyramid” because they involve found footage and monsters waiting underground, it’s a kind of horror that, for a while, made me more scared of the dark than when I was a little kid
