Feeling pressured to have a patron deity? You're not alone! Maybe you've devoured goddess lists from ten different pantheons and taditions, or maybe you've even joined a neo-pagan or Wiccan group. Paganism feels right for your spiritual path, but something isn't clicking: you're still not sure how to pick your first deity to work with. (Or, maybe you've picked a god or goddess you like - but what do you do next?)
Here are a few tips and strategies to get over the biggest hump of beginner paganism: worshiping deities.
Whether you're pagan, Wiccan, a druid, or a lightworker, I hope this perspective on overcoming patriarchal monotheism when entering the pagan path helps you find the right fit for you.

Just the title alone, saying '*first* deity' gave me peace of mind. Theres no rush to find one and to get everything right, I need to remember that

I keep seeing people saying "You don't choose your deity, your deity chooses you."

I love this video, thank you for making it.

When I first started my witchy journey, I was still atheist. Even still, I was always drawn to Apollo & Artemis.
I love the arts, I loved archery when I was given the time to actually do it, wolves always fascinated me
I'm really connected to the night (the new moon specifically), I'm pretty sure one of my spirit guides is a deer spirit, I *love* nature
And now I realize that I'm Pagan and I'm making a Pinterest altar for Apollo & Artemis <3

I've felt connected to Aphrodite quite a lot recently, specially being a libra(ruled by Venus) and born in the year of the Rabbit(although different tradition, the rabbit is a sacred animal to Aphrodite). Also, for as long as I could remember I've felt connected to bodies of water and aquatic life, as a result I worshipped other deities that are seen in society as being connected to water(such as Poseidon, Amphitrite, Chalchiutlicue, Tlaloc). However, when I started to learn more about Aphrodite and learned that she is a deity that is very connected to water, I started to worship her. Moreover, being bisexual and someone who loves physical touch and sex a lot, Aphrodite felt like a goddess who was calling me a lot. Almost instantly did I feel connected to my goddess more than any other deity, worshiping her felt so natural and comforting that I instantly felt she was my Matron. I still worship other deities as well, such as Chalchiutlicue, Tlaloc, Mother Earth, Xochipilli(who visited me in a dream), Poseidon, Amphitrite, and Hecate, but Aphrodite is definitely the deity whom I feel most connected to and my Matron.

I'm excited to start this journey. Lately I've been feeling drawn to Hades, Hecate, and Aphrodite, but I've been a bit confused because Athena embodies many qualities I want to look into, but I don't feel particularly drawn to her.

I love this, Ive been re-evaluating my view on this and I appreciate your insights! I’ve been called to more “lighter” deity energies because of being in the “darker” energies of the human experience. I totally agree with the Aphrodite aspect ♥️🌹 thank you for this . Also you are lovely .

As someone who has just realized I want to work with deity(s) this has helped so much, I was so unsure of what to do or how to go about it but you explained it wonderfully. Thanks you so much ❤️ (also your voice is really lovely)

The first deity I came into contact with was Aphrodite as well. I was going through a really tough time about 3 years ago and was crying in the bath. She came and hugged me and gave me positive affirmations. She came to me again a few times since then including once in a DMT trip. I'm not good at regular worship and I've also started researching other deities, specifically Celtic. I no longer hear from her when I reach out (or any other deities for that matter) and I'm worried I offended her for those reasons.

Freya has been sending me signs for months now and I’ve found myself drawn to her more and more. I’ve never been interested in deities because I don’t like the idea of worshiping an entity. I more like the idea of working with them, learning lessons from them, and discovering new things about me and opening myself up in my craft with their aid. I also don’t really like the idea of boxing myself into a religion. I don’t necessarily know if that’s considered disrespectful or not really how it works...? I guess I just need a little more guidance on the subject🥺

I love this so much! I totally relate to the influence of patriarchal religions effecting how we relate to deity. As someone who grew up Christian (I was even in a Christian cult for 8+ years), I struggle with relating to other Divine energies (especially feminine ones), but I'm recently feeling a strong pull in that direction. I'm getting into paganism/New Age/witchy forms of spiritual practice, and the pull to relate to a goddess energy is strong! Looking forward to researching and trying that "bear method." 😁

Thank you so much for this! Deity work has been really confusing with all these opinions and ideas and rules, but the way you see it is one of my favorites 💕

I've always been drawn to Egyptian mythology and Ancient Egypt as a whole ever since I was about 4 or 5 years old. I was raised in the primitive Baptist religion but I always hated it. I never felt comfortable even as far as being scared of the church as a child. As I got older and was able to stop going to Christian church at 18, I realized that I always felt close to egyptian and Norse deities. I'm just now at 25 years of age willing to accept my spirituality. I'm really nervous, but I'm also excited to get started. Thank you for your videos! ❤

Poor knees! Sorry you're in pain. What a great video. You really touched on something here, that this ideal "grand entrance" opening and deep relationship with a deity is rare. Without ESP's or visualization abilities it's just going to be harder for people in the same way that someone born to do math is going to have an easy time at algebra. Yet those of us who weren't can still do it and find joy in that.

I was brought up an atheist and never had an interest into religion, even less catholic (the main religion in my country), so when I got into witchcraft later : I practiced as an agnostic.
I didn't have any dieties but I felt strongly drawn to Baast and Anpu (Bastet and Anubis as I like to call them). I always loved egyptian mythology more than any other mythology, so I've finally decided to make my first Imbolc altar dedicated to Anubis and Baast (death and hapiness -rebirth also I guess which made me think of spring).
Honestly, if someone had told me years ago I would make any altar for one of these deities, I'd thought them crazy and laugh my **** off, but here I am ^^. I'll probably include some nordic gods next, since I feel drawn to some of them as well =)
Part of me is still a bit agnostic, but I strongly believe that you should do what makes you happy in life and this makes me happy, therefore I do it.

I’m still very new as I look into Kemetic paganism, but since reading and learning more and more I’ve felt very drawn to Horus, but since this is all so new I’m not sure he is calling to me. I felt and still feel hesitant to reach out first and ask but this has really inspired me to at least try and perhaps working with him.
