Am I right in that you don't need any special tools other than a hammer? Do you need a drill?

Better to use a mallet instead of a hammer if you have one available.

How stable is it without screwing the unit to the wall?

It was impossible to hit the shelves in by hand they wouldn’t go I had to use a hammer with a cloth to cover the edge and still damaged the shelves and now it’s in the trash .. never again

You forgot the part where you have to cut 1cm off the dowels with wire cutters because they are just that much longer than the hole that were drilled for them.

Have a problem. Can't lay the unit down as there is not enough floor space and cannot move from another room as passageways are too narrow. Might have to assemble on the side.
