Investigation opened after Seattle officer heard joking about pedestrian's death | ABC News

A Seattle police accountability office is investigating after an officer was recorded on his body camera joking about the death of a 23-year-old woman who was fatally struck by another officer who was responding to a call.

Graduate student Jaahnavi Kandula was in a crosswalk the night of Jan. 23 when an officer driving 74 mph struck her with his patrol SUV, authorities say. Police say that officer was responding to an emergency call.

In newly released body camera footage, another officer who was responding to the scene of the fatal collision can be heard discussing the incident, while laughing, on the phone in his cruiser.

The Seattle Police Department released the footage this week.

This is the most disgusting thing to hear coming from a police officer, to be laughing about a death as tragic as it was, and this could have been one of his family members that could have died tragically the same way and he gets a phone call while he’s on duty . His reaction and words and laughter says a lot about him. Heartless, totally cold hearted and he’s a disgrace to the uniform and does not deserve to be on the police force. and to me his behavior and actions calls for immediate attention and he should be fired from his not deserved position as being qualified as a police officer ASAP

This same thing exactly happened in my boyfriend's mom's case in ALABAMA. Because the victim was a elderly woman, the officer didn't even go to her to give her care, instead rushing to the young driver, saying, "You know how old people are." Letting her go without repercussions or even testing. "LIMITED VALUE"

Hearing these words, "She was 26, she had limited value." "Just a regular person." Her value was "$11K" "Just write a check" Who was he talking to, Trump!? That is how disgusting this man's value on human beings is. I would not count on this man to: save lives, be fair, be impartial, take his job seriously. I would not trust him to take care of a 1 year old child. The value on that child's life is probably, what, 50 cents?
