PVC bows are a great way to get started with traditional archery for under $20. Making PVC bows was cheap and fun, easy to get started in archery.

When I first started shooting traditional archery, I was shooting a straight pvc pipe. PVC can make a decent bow. It was not fancy but, it did the trick. It cost me less than $20 to get started and I discovered how much I enjoyed archery and wanted to grow. After that, I saved my money and bought my first manufactured bow, a Samick Sage. It's a great way to get started for not a lot of money.

In this video, I share my story of how the archery bug bit me and I offer a few tips to get started for low money.

God Bless You
Joe

i honestly got started with fiberglass bows at like, 20 pounds in a camp 8 years ago. and then many years later, last summer, I picked up my first true, decent poundage recurve. but inbetween those times, I went through a few compounds. but just today, I picked up a longbow, and love it already!

Your's and 3D Greg's Sage vids are what nudged toward buying one. 3 Rivers has em for $139 and starter kits starting at $214. Gonna sally forth this week and track down some pipe for my first bow.

Joe thanks for the tips and sharing your journey. I started at the local shop, owner handed me a lower end long bow, some arrows and told me "just shoot and have fun". That was over 2 years ago and I haven't shot my compound but once since then.

Thanks for the video Joe, it's a great topic.
I am new to Archery and thought traditional archery was expensive wooden bows until I found out through the wonders of YouTube that fibreglass bows were super popular in the fifties/sixties (and later) and that some of those old bows are still shooting well now.
I recently saw a YouTube video from Dave Canterbury at Wilderness outfitters praising a old fibreglass bow he bought very cheaply.
we haven't got the same number of old fibreglass bows out here in the UK to buy second hand but some some new companies are actually manufacturing their own bows from pipe and moulding into some great looking bows. I have took the plunge and I am waiting for one such bow( a long bow) to arrive . It cost me £ 40 with free postage from the maker so I am looking forward to trying such a cheap bow. The makers are Celtic Bows over in Wales.
Making a bow like you did looks great and I think I'll give it a try one day.
Thanks again for posting.

Hi Joe, I got into trad archery via being inspired by the English Longbow and the raising of Henry VIII's Mary Rose tudor warship that sank in the Solent just off Portsmouth. I was amazed at the longbows that were brought up from that and that they were the only existing real and actual bows used at the time 😮 I had a strong urge to own a longbow and found out a friend had actually made some and got him to make me one of lemonwood and hickory 😊 it turned out too strong for me to shoot so i decided to make one myself, and did 😃 I made a total of four eventually cos once youve built one, you cant stop doing it again 😊 it was my first experience of shootin a bow without sights so a learning experience right there 😊 but it felt so good shooting a bow and arrows I had made myself 😎 such a wonderful feeling of satisfaction and joy 😊 I drifted away from it for many years and then one day discovered Youtube and stumbled on Wolfie Instinctive Archer's channel and all the lights came on in my brain once more 😃 my original friend built longbow still survives but has many chrysals in the limbs and will never be shot again and two of my own builds still live, one has a chrysal that im considering repairing and one is fully functionable and hauls around 52lb 👍 I would like to make a pvc bow but that schedule 20 type pvc is not freely available here in the UK and ordinary pvc/abs or whatever it is wont be any good.
I do intend to make a self flatbow this year hopefully from ash or hazel and see how i fare at that. You should try making a wood bow Joe its very satisfying. Hope you are getting your form sorted out with your lightweight Pearson 👍😊
PS Backyard Bowyer is an awesomely talented and inventive guy 😊👍

Been out of archery since the early 90s, and have missed it. With money being tight after a divorce and the development of a new life, I thought I'd go the PVC bow route. Turns out that I'm much more skilled at watching The Backyard Bowyer make PVC bows than I am at making them. After seeing a number of review videos on YouTube about the Samick Sage, I went to my local archery store and they had the Sage at $128 after tax. Picked up a 40 pound model last Wednesday. Haven't bought arrows yet because putting new ball joints and brake pads on my vehicle became a priority. Next week, I will pick up a half dozen Gold Tip Traditionals in 400 spine and begin flinging arrows. I can't wait.

My start into archery was a solid fiberglass recurve bow that my grandma gave me when I was little and I shot it a little bit with a couple wood arrows.

Was playing Legend of Zelda games before that and thought the swords, boomerangs, bows and arrows etc etc were so cool :). That was part of what got me into archery.

Years later I had a new string and a carbon arrow with that same bow and shot it some more, sadly a lil bit later I ended up damaging it being stupid and dry firing it playing pretend lol.

Later shot some newer bear Archery solid fiberglass bows and got a barnett brand solid fiberglass youth longbow/flatbow with hard plastic recurve style riser. Shot that and a Omp smokey mountain hunter takedown recurve (basically a re branded samick sage, the riser is definitely the same) I knew at that point I wanted to be serious with archery.

At this point I was originally gonna buy a custom PVC takedown recurve with a cut to center PVC/wood composite riser, Which lead me to getting my 50 pound Bear Archery Super Mag 48 recurve bow and a quiver for $30 at a garage sale as mentioned in previous comments.

Been more seriously into archery since and want to get into fishing and hunting, I have some cousins that go fishing and bow hunting. Gonna be getting some 200 grain field points and a bareshaft test kit soon just in case these Bemans I have still tune too stiff with 200 grain points and 100 grain inserts.

I should also get some 700 or 800 spine Fleetwood carbons for my barnett youth longbow/flatbow at some point too, I think it's measured 25 pounds at a 27 inch draw. It may be drawing 32-35 pounds at my draw length

i make self bows. so much fun and super cheap. you can get started with a small investment of $10 for a red oak board at lowes get a $5 rasp and $3 for a roll of para-cord and you are in business. there are a lot of videos on you tube on how to make a red oak bow. since my first red oak bow i have made 7 bows and I am progressively getting better at making them. more styles, better tools, better craftsmanship and using better materials. you can buy a hickory longbow kit on amazon for $39. i have made two of those and they turned out awesome and shoot very good.

I swear Archery must have taken a LOT of stress out of your life, because you look much younger now than the Sage Video!

I had almost the EXACT same introduction to archery, and I thought i was pretty darn good with those PVCs....

Great video to let folks know that they don't need to invest a bundle to enjoy archery. We all started sometime, I still shoot my stickbow and the most I've spent for a bow since then is my Samick Sage. I like to think I've improved my knowledge and form over the years since I first posted on Youtube at  bowman 32113
