Yes, checking the shark's behaviour before going is is good, yes - if they aren't in attack mode and you do not act like prey you will be fine especially with a boat nearby - BUT - it's a mistake to think animals will always act in a predictable manner. that "redirecting" does not work if the shark really attacks.
