Number two is hands down the most important thing to remember. Goth subculture is a culture of otherness, and excluding those who have been othered by society is literally the least goth thing you could do.

Thanks for busting these myths. Everyone needs to just be themselves.

I appreciate this! I admire the goth aesthetic, the music, the art, the fashion--everything! Just do whatever makes you happy! I don't identify as goth or any subculture in particular; I'm just me. However, I LOVE so many facets of goth. If the goth police want to waste time and energy calling others and me out, let them be miserable. ;) Exclusion isn't cool.

I never understand why people feel the need to create ridiculous rules with subcultures. A lot of are attracted to subcultures not only because we love the music and aesthetic; but, we like thinking outside of the box, we hate being fenced in. We hate the inane "supposed to's" & "just because" explanations of mainstream society. So why create rigid in the box thinking? It just serves to create what we were trying to get away from.

I always find it so sad when people think others doing what they want to do is a phase! I hope not!

I don't even know who/what that first brand you mentioned is/was. Goth has been around since at least the 70s. To be goth, it's more about listening to Sisters of Mercy. I do NOT wear a ton of black anymore. I'm 47. I got bored with black. But I still have a Pandora playlist called "Goose Lamp" that plays Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie, Skinny Puppy (okay, SKA), Smiths, Joy Division, Mazzie Star etc. Every decade or so, goth gets another flavor. Now it's goth in Instagram, and with brand names. There was a grunge goth (minus the flannel) at the same time as big hair-and-winged-sunglasses goth, and very anti-brand name. And people have always argued about what it is, and what it isn't...so some things never change.

There’s so many stereotypes. Thanks for myth busting

I love the aesthetic and the music equally! I’ve always taken the approach that I’m “goth on the inside “ at all times even when I have to dress to fit in, I know who I am.

I'm goth, since I was 14, I'm 30 now, I used to dress pure black but now I like more pastel, so I guess I'm considered pastel goth? perky goth?, the thing is: i'm still goth bc i listen to goth music and live the subculture, so I don't understand why people get sooo crazy about the clothes, is like, the less important part of the subculture? lol, not like is not important at all, but still...is not that important...You could be nude with a sombrero in your head and still being goth.

This is great! Thank you! Because I've been listening to goth music since I was 8, but I've never really adopted what most consider the goth clothing style.

Man, I'm confused. I have friends who listen to bands considered goth, but identify more with the punk scene...

We found an album of "Gothabilly", like goth and rockabilly, it is fantastic! And we love Voltaire, he's a great guy. We'll listen to anything, really, from hard rock and prog to classical and classic jazz. Good music is good music! We may not look goth, more like middle aged whatever, but we have a dark side!

These myths needed to be busted. Sometimes being Goth is a phase, other times it's a lifestyle. Live the lifestyle you love as long as you don't hurt others.

Thanks for the great video. I'm not Goth, but am Goddess-y. People seem to be more and more locked into their myopic views about everything. Thanks for a refreshing reminder that the world is full of gray zones and flexibility.

I heard this song recently on Pandora. We play Indie/Folk for our granddaughter. (she is 14 months old) The song is Ten Thousand Words by The Avett Brothers. The song lyrics REALLY got me thinking. I hope you can look the song up here on The Tube and see how the song applies to many things in life. 💜💜 I tried to link it for you but my phone is being a bully!!!

Excellent video! I think it’s important that you acknowledged the racism that is unfortunately happening in some parts of the subculture. I wish I could shake these people and scream in their faces, “Biologically all Homo sapiens are descendants of the same two parents!!! It’s 2019!!! Wake up!!!”
Sorry, it’s been a tough week😳
Thank you for taking the time to make this video!!!💙💙💙🌈🌈🌈
