Once you believe in Jesus, can't you be done? Why do we need to belong to the Catholic Church instead of any other Christian congregation? Catholic apologist Trent Horn discusses these questions on Catholic Answers Live.

After his conversion to the Catholic faith, Trent Horn earned master’s degrees in the fields of theology, philosophy, and bioethics. He serves as a staff apologist for Catholic Answers, where he specializes in teaching Catholics to graciously and persuasively engage those who disagree with them.

Trent models that approach each week on the radio program Catholic Answers Live and on his own podcast, The Counsel of Trent. He has also been invited to debate at UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, and Stanford University.

Trent is an adjunct professor of apologetics at Holy Apostles College, has written for The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly, and is the author of nine books, including Answering Atheism, The Case for Catholicism, and Why We’re Catholic: Our Reasons for Faith, Hope, and Love.

I’m naming my future son “TRENT” This man contributed a lot of my understanding of faith and deepened my Catholic faith as a whole.

I feel that often, when there is disagreement in doctrine, it is either a lack of understanding or application of ancient Judaism, not reading the whole Bible in context, and not applying the Old Testament to the New.
Lastly of course, is individual pride.

when I first left the cult I was raised in, I wanted to be "just Christian". after reading up on the denominations and church history, I quickly learned that there really isn't anything that is "just Christian".

So glad you said " apostles" . it seems to have been dropped a lot recently, not recognising the 12 as the special men whom Jesus chose when He started His ministry on earth. Now they are just referred to as disciples like the rest of us. ☺

What does "just Christian" even mean? I know people use that to mean "not a Catholic", but what positive value does it have? Is that a sort of "read the Bible to find things I like, ignore the rest, and feel good about myself"? The classical word for that is "presumption", and that's a gravely dangerous vice...

One of the "Traditions" we both believe....Catholic and Protestants alike is the canon of scripture...so, why i believe in Christ and worship in my church should be cool with both sides of the house. Trent ...thanks for being calm and cool in your response! 😀

“Nowhere in the Bible does it say a collection of books is or sole authority.”

2 Timothy 3 16-17

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Not the church

Christ be with you
I am Catholic because love and obedience to God are the foundation of the Church.
This is a Christian doctrine. (John 13:34-35)

Protestantism is built on a doctrine of faith alone.
While there may be protestants who are Christian it will not be because of this doctrine.
It is not Christian.

God bless you

Why I could not be Catholic? As a born again Bible believing Christian the gospel is wonderful .God created a perfect world Adam and Eve sinned and the sin nature began .This caused a break in the relationship with god.Jesus came down and died for my sins and rose again for my justification and the relationship with god is available .Who saved me Jesus ? What is my work ? To believe .Where do my good works fit in ? They are done out of love and gratitude for what God has done for me .I cannot earn my salvation .It is a free gift and if I did it would not be grace.I cannot be a religious self righteous Pharisee rather I give all the glory to God and Jesus and rely on his righteousness in Christ. God bless

So am I to understand that Jesus gave His authority to the Apostles and that Jesus no longer answers prayers, forgives sins, heals, delivers, etc.? In the Name of Jesus all of these are done without a priest so how do you explain that?

More like “ why be Christian and not just protestant”

Here he acknowledges that it's he had to grapple with the question "why be Catholic and not just Christian" but now with interactions with Protestants he says Christian Protestant is not the default position so to speak but that seems to be basically what he acknowledges is or was the case and that is essentially what he moved from (an understanding of Christian Protestant to be a kind of baseline or default type starting place).

"But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed."
Galatians 1:8 ESV

Hi Friends, Please read complete Galatians and check yourself what gospel your denomination preaches.. if they add something on top of this, then decide yourself. Many times I hear the argument of what 2 nd century followed or wrote and adding it has teaching of church. I am not against every 2nd century Christians or leaders, if their teaching sync with the writings of original apostles we can listen to them, if not we have to ignore is what my opinion. Moreover in Galatians Paul is addressing false preacher who disguise as leaders during 1 st century... approach of depending on early Christian teaching might be not a good option. Instead trust the teaching of original apostles.

Apostle Paul says he got the revelation directly from God. And he teaches gospel clearly. Read Galatians fully and check what gospel your church teaches. Above all ask God's help to reveal you.. Good day.
