"They do not pay you to be anxious off the clock."

I need to start apply this in my life too

Thank you for the pre shift anxiety tip! I’ve been telling myself “you’re only allowed to worry once you get there”- kind of similar and does the trick for me

I'm so glad to see you still work as a nurse!

That is the best advice I’ve gotten too. Off the clock is me time. I need to continue to apply that throughout my life

I graduated from LPN school in 1973 and RN school in 1978. I work as a special care, complex medical pediatric home care nurse. You WILL continue to learn something new each day because medicine and nursing changes. Your advice is great; I just want to add to it… be aware of where you are emoting and who is around you. Do not complain to your peers because it places a big, negative wedge in “team”. Report to work on time-ready to take report, leaving your personal life at home, take all your breaks (for food and sanity), and leave on time, leaving all your work life at work. Don’t go home and complain to your husband or best friend. It creates a negativity that will not die. Your husband or friend will continue to ask you how are things going now, forcing you to address again the negativity from work. OT is great, but in reality, I do not profit if I work more than 1 extra shift a week. It all goes to taxes. Most of all, you need as much a regular life as everyone else, providing care 24/7 is very difficult. Walk away from the complainers. Walk away from the gossiping. Walk away from any situation in which you are not involved. Work in a clinic or hospital is a hyperactive environment with telephones ringing constantly, always asking you for something. Filter the chaos and maintain your focus. It is OK to count the hours and minutes until you are relieved!

Can some please explain what issue the anxiety comes from? Like, is the worry that you might give the wrong dose of medication, or your workmates won't be nice, or patients won't be nice? Genuinely curious

Did you always know that you want to be a nurse .. I actually want to get into the medical field (I’m senior high school student by the way) but I get so anxious when I see a needle or take an injection .. so I want to know if it is normal to feel so and if it will get better if I actually get into medicine?!?
