It's exactly as you said: he lost all hope. He was too late to be with Victoria, she was married to someone else, so there was nothing left for him to go back for in the land of the living. Might as well stay and try to make Emily happy, who had been through so much.

Burton designed Victor, the Everglots, Emily and Bonejangles (along with a few extras) himself and they were refined from there. Everyone else was designed from scratch.

Coraline is actually Henry Selick, not Tim Burton! If you haven't read the book by Neil Gaiman you absolutely should!

Coraline is actually not directed by Tim Burton. It's directed by Henry Selick. Also, Corpse Bride is my favorite Tim Burton movie
