How to Install Linux Mint on VirtualBox

Install Linux Mint on VirtualBox in Windows 7 / Windows 8

If you get stuck on Mint screen:
1.Shutdown machine
2.Enter Mint machine settings
3.Enable PAE/NX at System/Processor section

The process is pretty straight-forward, but I wanted some assurance that I was making the right choice with the default option of "erase disk and install linux mint" I have a current backup of my laptop drive, but didn't want to deal with the hassle of restoring it if I accidentally installed over my Windows installation.

I see this is an old thread, but I just want to thank you for it.  I had problems installing mint 17 as a guest via virtualbox and couldn't get any appropriate answers else where.  After reviewing your post I figured it out.  Thanks man!

Very easy and was able to get Mint installed! One thing i would like to say is that if you're running virtualbox 4.3.14 it will not let u install mint. for some reason 4.3.12 seemed to work. Just an FYI!!

The iso file i download doesn't show up the same way as yours, it appears like a .rar file that needs to be extracted, need solution?

It freezes, and Enabling PAE/NX did not fix it.

I installed just like you but after it counts down boot process it just stays on the mint screen. I have already manually re-started it, any suggestions

I installed Linux Mint 16 this morning and was stuck on the Black Screen with the Linux Mint symbol showing, but nothing was happening. I did some research and found out if you: "enable PAE/NX in settings/system/processor." It works just fine.

one question I have,  so I have a 1 TB external Hard Drive, and I installed Win 7 using VMware in the external Hard Drive, but the question I have is at the option where it says "Erase Disk and install Linux Mint", now I know I am using a Virtual Disk, but is that going to delete, lets say my other files including the Windows VM I have created earlier and saved it in the Hard Drive?
This is very important, some people are saying Yes it will, and others are saying, it Won't. So I am confused here, because I truly like to have a bunch of Operating Systems all installed in that Passport WD 1 TB Hard Drive whenever I plug it into my computer LOL.

Thank you for the great video. One question - I notice you too have the dialogue box saying that Mint is running using Software Rendering mode... Have you figured out why? I am running an Intel HD4400 and get the same error/msg. Any ideas?

Also the network name portion of the setup is so annoying... If you change from the default it offers... it begins saying that the network name is already in use for almost everything you try to use if it contains any part of what was in there before... very annoying glitch?!
