when i was a student in college, i thought i would never make it as a musician. i always felt like i had something to apologise for, like my hands shaking when i played soft snare drum, and also a basic fear of listeners not accepting my interpretations of music. so in this video, i want to talk to you about how to deal with imposter syndrome, and exactly how i got over it in my own playing.

that small clip of you on drumset was fascinating to see. When I think of this channel I definitely wouldn't have pictured you rocking out the kit.

Wow...never realized how similar we are in the background aspect. Was all about drumset, but until sophmore year of undergrad. Very late classical bloomer;)

I really feel this and it almost made me quit but I decided to be brave and I’m now taking choir and voice lessons at my college!

I had had 6 years of experience playing piano then went to the classical side when I started collage. So... I relate to all your comments about imposter syndrome on a deep level. On the other hand at the end of 4 and 1/2 years I gave a 1/2 hr recital and 1/2 lecture on the music. Though in meny ways I feel I am just beginning to become the musian I want to be. Yet I keep at it. Thank you for the video.

This same syndrome has kept me from performing in public despite playing for 30 years, having a masters degree in musicology, and teaching classes at the college level. And it’s for largely the same “roots shame” reasons you discussed. So how does one get over this if they are farther outside of music than you?

Thank you. I've been feeling this way for a year or two specifically around other musicians I play with, with teachers it's surprisingly calm. Your video made me think positively and find solutions to the specific weaknesses that may seem like a general, unspecific and unsolvable problem.

Thank you so much for this video Rob! This really helps with what I’ve been feeling for some recent rehearsals. It’s funny, I’m so used to working and playing my music but my imposter syndrome hits hard when learning someone else’s music. Your tip on getting to a place where you feel you’re making authoritative choices with the music is mind blowing. I think I’ve been subconsciously doing that, but didn’t realize why it was helping. The psychology behind it is fascinating!
