I stopped listening to rap music about a month ago. I knew for a long time that rap music was crippling my communication skills and filling my imagination with negative images and ideas. Im so glad to have finally come to my senses

I sometimes felt "dirty" after listening to rap, because it didn't fit into my morals.

Violence, drugs, gangs, anti social, profanity, sex, horrible body tattoos, this is all about rap culture.

I’m 19 and I’ve also realized how rap is holding back my generation especially and I think it’s time for me too give it up this is like the 2nd time I’ve given it up and I think it’s about to be the final time.

Brilliantly articulated. Life is short, separate yourself from negativity. Among other genres I love, slow jazz is oh so good!

Lmao I’m 17 and I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks rap is so negative

Hell yeah, black people have given us much better music than rap. Hendrix alone was one of the best guitarists who lived. It's a shame people let rap cloud their desires and degrade them into thugs.

It also degrades women in at least half of the genre.

Rap music has ruined my life too and I’m glad I stop listening to it and moved on with my life. Is so negative all they do is talk about violence and killing downgrading women they promote a lot of violence they been doing it since NWA first came out.

I'm from Texas and I never liked hip hop or rap. I've always loved R&B, Pop, Rock, Jazz, Soul, Old School. It has expanded my mind, opened the doors to meeting a variety of people and made me feel good. Hip Hop and Rap does NOT do that for me. If anyone has a problem with me or anyone else of color not liking or listening to Rap...just show them your lifestyle and accomplishments and than they will shut up!

I agree Rap has a negative effect on society, I wish today’s society music was like 40’s and 50’s just nice smooth beats and no bad language! 👍🏾

Rap just angers me now. The "artists" are abysmal, their listeners are brain-dead, wannabe gangstas and it doesn't help that veteran rappers like Snoop and TI continually cosign them.

I thought I was alone on this. I've seen the way rap has influenced an entire generation of people in such a negative way. I use to love rap because it told the artists story's. Now it literally just talks about flaunting material objects, having lots of money, make drugs seem cool, but the one that makes me cringe the most is how they talk about women. What's even worse is when the women participate in it, it shows a lack of self respect. It's morally reprehensible.

I really never listen to modern rap unless I’m forced. It just sounds like a beat in the background while the person talks about sex, drugs, and violence

I'm 19, not even black. But I feel the same. It started that since I'm Asian American, I was automatically an outcast and I wanted to become popular and all the popular kids listened to rap. But I couldn't stand the ignorant shit they liked. So I got really into "softer" artists like Kanye, Drake, Chance and Childish Gambino. I also really loved socially conscious rappers like Isaiah Rashad, Kendrick Lamar, Mick Jenkins and Common.

I knew in the back of my mind that one day, I would have to stop because it's really not "my" music. They rapped about black issues and I'm not black. They said the n-word and I'm not allowed to say that when rapping along to my favorite songs. They swore a lot and I never curse in my everyday speech. The part I hated that most was that even supposedly "responsible" socially conscious rappers still casually rapped about their sexual conquests and "getting head." I'm not a player and I'm not misogynistic at all. It wasn't me.

The same goes for music.

I agree 100% any music that belittles your own woman should not be listened to. I too stopped listening to rap, nothing good came from it. Bible verse alway comes to mind. “I left childish things behind when I became a man”

I totally agree. when i listen to rap and electronic music it makes me want to drink and smoke weed. When i listen to 1940s music. I dont have any urge to do those things

kid in my high school argued with my Language Arts teacher. He said how he wants to become a rapper. He dressed and acted the part (basically a young naive tool with tough gangsta syndrome)

The teacher was reasonable. telling him that he won't amount to much without an education. He responded with "my favorite rapper never finished school" the class laughed at him when he left.

Right now he's either on the streets begging for money or living in his parents basement as a cringy mumbling Soundcloud rapper. Rap has a bad influence on a lot of kids that listen to it and aspire to be one.
