I was born on an American military base in Germany, but I'm still considered an American. I guess since German laws don't apply there, America was free to claim me ^_^

That is the best explanation of why the US has a base in Cuba; i almost spit my drink out laughing. I would add that if the US ever completely leaves the base, even just for a minute, the land reverts back to Cuba. Even if the entire base were on fire and being invaded by aliens and zombies, there would be at least one soldier ordered to remain at his post, lest the base automatically revert back to Cuban hands.

Wow, it sure was nice of Cuba to rent out that land for us.

If you go to an American embassy anywhere in the world they always tell you "welcome to The United States"

You have a talent for making a complex point of contention sound hilarious.

Very rarely is information presented so concisely, humorously and earnestly. Thank you, Grey, for making my life a little bit more full of knowledge and happiness.

Am I the only one here that found this incredibly effing hilarious??  I've watched it 15+ times now, and "Thank you for renting us this land" has become an inside joke amongst my friends. Thanks CGP Grey!

Another fun annecdote is that the US doesn't own their embassy in London (the only one of their embassies that they don't own, I believe).  They asked to buy it from the Duke of Westminster (who owns the land it's built on). The Duke said that he would give it to them, if they gave him the state of Virginia (which they had confiscated from his family after the war of independence).  Sounds fair to me :D

Looks like the US uses my favorite tactic "ignore w.e they say and do it anyway"

I think it's interesting though cause whenever I visited American bases in Europe (mostly Germany), you drive on and suddenly see a taco bell and you pay with dollars and you go to the supermarket and they have an aisle full of american cereals and it properly felt like little America to me! I am not American but my cousin is and she used to be stationed there for a looong time. As I am Dutch it was easy to visit her and I always found it very interesting.

So, thats why USA can use Guantanamo bay as prison that basically lawless? Since technically it's not part of USA and Cuba refuse their rent, so Cuban and USA law is not applied there, right?

Whether it be in the form of a podcast, a longer video, or just a "footnote" video, the more Grey the better! :D

Jesus christ, I was hoping to see more moderates in this sort of video's comments. What I see is an equal divide between "America, fuck yeah" and "Fuck America, yeah."

Are there so few people left who can't see it's the same as every other nation? One with moments to be proud of, and others to be ashamed for taking part in? Goddamn I mean, it's headache-inducing looking at arguments between "'murica patriots" and "USA did everything bad ever" nutters.

"Here's our rent payment!"

"We... don't accept that... please leave?"

"...Thank you for renting us this land."

R.I.P my sides. I hardly knew ye.
