I can already hear the cries of “Get a planner” from the seagulls in the distance.

For me, I procrastinate because I can't get motivated until I know I have no choice but to complete it.I drives me with ideas, but I hate the pressure I feel to complete it.

The part I hate the most about ADHD is always feeling like I have to explain myself and my behavior because people don’t understand and just write you off as incompetent, lazy, or irresponsible. I’m frustrated with myself all the time.

"That's a problem for future me." - Me talking about every deadline in my life

It’s like the deadlines are a cargo ship that’s going to run aground; you know it’s coming, but you can’t see well enough to know when you should start to run.

You also need the sense of urgency to provide the dopamine to actually write the paper. What a feedback loop!

💯 I often say we have 2 times: "now", and "not now".

That is me, Do it tomorrow but tomorrow never comes. Go to bed today planning on tomorrow. Wake up today. Where in the hell did tomorrow go?

I felt a deep rage in my soul when other you kept talking while you were typing, causing you to stop 😂 I currently have a paper due in 2 days at 11:59 pm.

And when those tasks are personal, side projects, you keep setting and missing deadlines because it feels so far in the future. I say this as a person who's been working on a comic for 9 years. 😭

Beautifully described! What never helped me, all those last minute written papers were praised by instructors as awesome, which perpetuates the continued behavior. If I start sooner, then my work might not be as good. 😢

I also want to add that the term time blindness comes from an adhd "specialist" who meant it in a really negative way even if he didn't intend to, so having you "reimagine" it this way is really healing and helpful ❤

Haven’t been diagnosed with ADHD but I think you just described my entire life…😅

I think is part of what makes me a good teacher. All these things I wish people had taught me, we discuss explicitly in my classroom. ND students get lessons they need and NT students learn this stuff a little earlier than they might through trial and error. Glad that many classrooms are now covering it through Social Emotional Learning curricula and associated executive functioning, too, in addition to the amazing educators who were out there long before me. :)

It's like we're all on a highway, but people with ADHD are stuck in traffic. Neurotypicals can easily prepare for the exit up ahead while we're constantly just trying to survive. We see the exit riiighhht at the last minute

Not to mention it's overwhelming trying to deal with something like that when you still have the day to day things to deal with rn

I’ve realized something that really helps me especially with school, is that the second that something gets assigned (even when it’s weeks until the due date) Is I do it the same night its assigned…. The only downfall is that i get hyper focused and end up working until the following morning because i can’t let it go unfinished. It’s a lose lose situation 😭

It's also got nothing to do with being able to plan it out or talk the logistics. It's the internal sense of perception of things that will allow the will to use these plans and thoughts like traction cleats to avoid slipping as you try to navigate your mental landscape.

This is not an issue with laziness or moral failing, this is literally not having the same internal mental tools that are so easily used by others that they forget that it's even a factor.
