Time Signature Tricks - How to switch time signatures without changing the time signature.

Sometimes music composers use different tricks to make music sound like it's written in a different time signature than the one on the page. In this video we look at two different techniques that help create this rhythm illusion. The first is a type of hemiola where two notes are played in the space of three and the example we look at is the second movement from Beethoven's ninth symphony. Then we look at a more modern technique where groups of eighth notes create the feeling of a different time signature.

This deserves more views. I'm trying to figure how and why math rock time signature changes work, music like Covet's album Effloresce and Chon's Homey have all of these crazy time signatures and I just cant rap my head around how to compose like that.. I almost feel like I could write the time signature changes out if I knew why I wanted them in certain places conceptually, and then perform to the click.

Wonderfully edifying lesson on this fascinating subject, which is often, difficult to explain to others. This is the most erudite explanation I have ever seen. Thank you.

I knew I recognised Hemiola from somewhere. My piano teacher told me about it 15 years ago.

I was studying two of us from the Beatles and the time signature is in 4/4, but some compases are en 2/4...Is this the reason it works??? Still haven’t sort out this thourghly

I can't stand doing the Maths in music. Love the linguistic side of it with the fancy words in Italian. Speak it fluently. I have perfect pitch, great technical abilities but cannot for the life of me abide the Maths side of stuff.😴
