Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. The way Mike gets upset and angry when Victor mentions that Nacho is too clean gets me. He just told his friend that its his last day is tomorrow and now they need to beat him up so it doesn't look suspicious to the Salamanca's.

I remember thinking in his first few scenes that Nacho had brains and potential, he was just caught up in a system too much for any one individual. He was the Bodie of this series.

Probably my favourite detail of the scene is the drink. At first it seems like it's to numb the pain for Nacho. Then Nacho notices there are two glasses. He sees Mike pour the drink and you can see he is deeply moved by this old guy who has only ever been gruff with him sharing a drink. Maybe it's my own perception, but the way he stands and watches is so much like a child watching his Dad pour him his first drink. Probably something an old fashioned father like Mike and Nacho's dad would have done for their sons. It's often an acknowledgment that a son has become a man in his own right and bonds them as such.

A great detail is that Mike waits until Nacho picks up the glass. It really highlights that this is meaningful beyond the practicalities but is also about respect (which is the other tenet Mike defines himself by.) Then, it seems like Mike is maybe about to say something, but then he sets himself and knocks it back. Then it is revealed the drink was not just for bonding, respect or for Nacho's pain, but for his own as he drains it in one while Nacho savours it.
