I hope my brother is able to live well one day. We just need him officially diagnosed and to get treatment. 😭😭💔

I think the reason so many people with this illness are often isolated is to avoid relapse. I can work a full time job and manage my finances very well but living a normal social life is the part I struggle with. If I'm in a room full of people I feel claustrophobic, like I'm in a tiny box at the bottom of the ocean. Being around people I don't know really gets my paranoia and stress levels high. It seems that's the normal with this illness. Can other people with this illness relate to that?

My 30 year old daughter is schizoaffective, currently in a secure mental health care center, has not lived on her own in 3 years. In these places a mentally ill resident cannot have a bad day like any of the rest of us--it's always considered a relapse. My daughter can do well & rise to the highest unit, have a bad day and be put down to the bottom & start all over again. I despair that she will ever be allowed to live on her own again & due to the pandemic is isolated from all family, loved ones, & friends.

Psych here, actually it's more than possible. About a 1/3 of patients with schziophrenia will have 1 psychotic episode and not relapse. Another 1/3 will require consistent medication to prevent symptoms. And unfortunately another 1/3 will have symptoms regularly for the rest of their life with highs and lows. This 1/3 will typically neglect medical treatment

I think this is really important to hear, there are many homeless people in my town (Vancouver) who appear to have schizophrenia (psychosis symptoms) and it appears the public and the government have given up on them. I'd love a video about exactly why people with schizophrenia are more likely to be homeless and any pathways out of it.

Good question. What exactly is a “normal” life?

I'm schizy, ya I don't know if we live normally but we normally live, w different cases having widely varied degrees of how dramatic symptoms come in, for example I very frequently hallucinate music in the background, the type of music, the volume and such have varied all over from mariachi style to heavy metal and every in between, this music can sometimes get pervasive and even aggravating, sometimes not always it will change when u focus on it, this for me is normal, constant input, things overlapping but not interfering w eachother that's normal and I like it. My normal is different from regular folk, normal lifestyle behaviour patterns look different on me, I like patterns but I get frustrated and by repetition, so I don't approach daily tasks the same, but I still have the same damn requirements as u do, eat drink breed do business and sleep it off... So yeah I'd say we can, and quite often do have normal lives, honestly I'd consider it harm if u took away my schiz, like an ugly sweater Its not always comfortable to wear its kept me warm and saw me thru some long cold winters... it's my home

Can it be genetically fixed in the future ? Is it on the molecular level or it is changes on the physical level in the brain ?

Ya. Whatever. I have it. They took all my licenses away to make a living. Then give me 1100 a month for a family of 4. I live in Canada.. meaningful lives? Ha. More like living an incredibly stressful life. Mentally. Financially. Disgraced. Period

can you talk more about depression with psychotic features and bipolar with psychotic features?

You shouldn't speak about schizoaffective disorder as same thing as schizophrenia. No one knows what's the root cause for these disorders and if it's genetic whether it's the same genes involved. I have schizoaffective disorder but don't believe that I have schizophrenia.Thx.
