Here are a few do’s and don’ts on underarm darkening.

▪️Use Glycolic acid cream not baking soda
Glycolic acid 6% cream can be used on alternate nights. This causes gentle exfoliation and reduces darkening and thickening of skin in underarms. Home remedies may not help in lightening dark underarms. Baking soda should absolutely not be used as it can cause burns.

▪️Amylac cream twice a day not frangrancea moisturiser
Ammonium lactate cream with provide better moisturization with gentle exfoliation of thickened dark underarm skin. Regular body lotions will not be as helpful.

▪️Gentle Hands to wash not loofah
Use a gentle body wash and use hand to foam the product. Do kit use loofah to scrub. It is not dirt and scrubbing will make darkness worse.

▪️Roll on not deodarant sprays
Roll one is a better option to mask the odour than deodorant sprays. Sprays are aerosolised and dispensed in alcohol base which can cause dryness and irritation to under arm skin.

▪️Laser hair reduction not Waxing
If you have thick hair in underarms requiring hair removal more than two times a month, then laser hair reduction is the best option. It requires 6-8 sessions done one month apart. It reduces hair growth by 90%. It is more cost effective in the long run compared to waxing. Application of hot wax can cause further darkening of skin in underarms. Shaving in the direction of hair maybe a bette root ion for hair removal than waxing.

⚠️If there is thickening of skin in underarms giving a velvety appearance, along with thickening of skin in neck and thighs, then we have to rule out Acanthosis nigricans. It is a condition where there is insulin resistance . Increased production of insulin leads to thickening and darkening of skin. Please visit your dermatologist or endocrinologist for evaluation.
