A new operating system written in Rust

Today we are going over a new operating system Google is building for embedded devices... KataOS.

There is also redox os which is a complete os with kernel core utils ui toolkit written from scratch using rust. It's in very early stage however

seL4 is mathematically guaranteed to implement its specification, not mathematical proven secure strictly speaking. If you find gaps in the specification you find gaps in the kernel, and this is an important difference. That said seL4 is definitely very secure, no joke. It would be hard to crack

It's sad that Google's well deserved reputation will make difficult for this project to garner support. The overall focus in security for embedded is something I agree with, and hope that we can get.

It’s funny because I trust my data with hackers more than I trust it with google. And we can all assume there’s a phone home feature in this OS.

a huge chunk of FusiaOS is written in rust too, as well as a whole OS named Redox written in Rust.

If the whole stack isn't open source, it's not secure, because I trust google even less than potential hackers.

Well yeah, it will be more secure so malicious actors won't get in that easily. But, there is one malicious actor that we are all forgetting that backdoor everything that it creates or gets in the way, google

I would never use a self driven car whose OS was written in JS. I would think about it if its written in Rust

I'm excited about this mostly for the research potential. Seeing what works and doesn't surely will be great for creating an OS in the future that is safe from the ground up

Should really clarify "embedded" because it definitely won't run on a microcontroller. I don't really consider anything with an MMU to be embedded but that's me.

I honestly swear Rust is the greatest programming language ever invented. It is the future of all technological development. Thats why everything is being migrated/ built from the grown up with Rust going forward. The first 40 years was written in C/C++, the next 40+ will be written in Rust.
