Heavily taxed like smoking, so people don’t drink so much, we have a drinking culture, so taxing these things slows down future alcoholics, drinking destroys family and futures, cause car accidents and ruins your health as well as slowly killing brain cells, there is talk of taxing soft drinks cordials with heavy sugar content as well, may help with obesity, hospitals and the health of Australian, I don’t mind all these things being taxed

Its technically cheaper because Australia doesn't require tips (workers actually get paid fairly), tax is included in the price, and Aud is unfortunately worth less than USD.

Today in New York $40 aud plus tax plus tip for a pastrami sandwich

I am a Canadian ex-pat living in Australia. Absolutely agree about the cocktails. Early on I was out to dinner with my Australian husband and I ordered a drink. What a shock. Never did it again.

We have minimum wage here so no tipping culture to guilt trip you into paying workers so the boss makes more money for vacation.

$22 is about 10 mins work for the average person...so not that expensive really.

I was in LA recently, $20USD (+ tip + tax) for an Old Fashioned... WTF

lol. So true! I was like “I don’t remember drinks being this insanely expensive in the states…”

That is like $14USD so that would be pretty close as to what you’d pay at home right?

They are expensive I don't have them often so when I have one I enjoy it .

Yeah nah, they're only $22 to Americans, once we hear your accent we immediately add a $15 "arrogance tax"!!!

It’s because it’s so good and we actually have drinkable coffee that is 100 percent real and natural

2 shots is double the amount of alcohol Americans use for drinks so naturally the price is double.

As an Australian, I'm so confused why you guys have a meager minimum wage ($23.23 per hour in Australia compared to USD 7.25 =~ AUD 11.50), don't even include TAX in your prices beforehand, and don't even recognise these factors in the first place. :)

well, I've never been to the US but that = about $14 US and we don't have to Tip.

Are you in Sydney? If so that makes sense to me The price of a drink?
The cocktails here are usually the same price and you still have to tip

Funny thing is research shows even with the high taxes the rate of alcohol abuse has not come down. It just makes it harder for people to seek help and makes people who can do the right thing poorer. These taxes are regressive.

Is that all you can think of? And how many in the US would be all that concerned about the price of cocktails anywhere?
