Runners with AT often present with a nodule or swollen tendon that hurts when it is squeezed or pressed. Pain is normally localised 2-7cm’s above the insertion at the calcaneus (heel).

𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬:

- Morning tendon stiffness during first few steps
- Impaired function during loading activities such as running and hopping
- A warm up pattern, tendon stiffness reduces as the tendon warms up as you begin loading such as running or walking in the morning.

In this video I am demonstrating the Royal London Hospital test, one of the most frequently used clinical tests for AT. A positive test is considered when there is pain on palpation with the foot relaxed and pain reduced significantly in maximal dorsiflexion (Matthews et Al, 2021).
