Breaking Down Boxing Styles | Craft Your Signature Strategy

There are 4 main styles and one sub-style:

Outfighter:
Usually, tall guys with good reach keep distance, have good footwork, throw light fast punches with the lead hand, and hard heavy punches with the rear hand, move in & out, mostly move backward and go forward when smelling blood. Main weakness - short-range fights. Examples: Muhammad Ali, Wladimir Klitschko

Infighter:
Usually, short guys, cut distance, have good head movement, throw well-balanced fast/hard combos on the inside. Main weakness - they always have to stay within their opponent's reach. Examples: Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier

Slugger:
Tall or short, it doesn't matter; these fighters are usually slow but have vicious power and focus on landing one heavy punch. Weakness - having troubles fighting quick boxers who make them miss. Examples: George Foreman, Sonny Liston.

Puncher:
Basically a mix of all styles. These fighters throw many fast and hard punches. Usually aggressive and get into punch exchanges. Main weakness - don’t specialize in one style and may get a lot of damage because of aggressiveness. Examples: Manny Pacquiao, Arturo Gatti

Counter-puncher:
It is the sub-style, and its techniques can be used in combination with any other style. Usually, these are not very aggressive and smart fighters who make you miss and then punish you. This style is about hitting and not getting hit, so it doesn’t have any significant weaknesses. Examples: Floyd Mayweather Jr, Saul Alvarez

Of course, everything depends on the fighter’s level, but usually:
Outfighters counter sluggers
Infighters counter outfighters
Sluggers counter infighters

Analyze your:
- Body type
- Speed/power ratio
- Temperament
- Boxing school

You can always mix styles, and you should always work not only on the strengths of your style but also on its weaknesses.

Imagine breaking into somebody's house and they have a boxing ring in their living room.

I thought I'd be an outfighter because I'm tall with very long arms, but I discovered very quickly how much power I can generate from my arms. I became somewhat of a pursuer to my sparring partners. I suppose I was very scary because I often made people run away! haha, I'd back all my opponents into the ropes and overwhelm them with my range. I learned how to counter effectively, and from there it was kind of set in stone. I became a very aggressive and punishing brawler, with a mixing style of in and out fighting. Transitioning to outfighter whenever my opponent would make range, and switching back to an brawler infighter whenever my opponent got caught up on the ropes. My head movement made it super difficult to land solid blows on me, I remember one time sparring, while dodging a straight punch, i had moved as much as I could which resulted in the punch hitting ONLY my nose! I didn't even notice it bleeding till someone pointed it out to me.

Unfortunately, money situation is bad and the economy isn't great right now. So I can't go to the gym anymore I used to train at, but I really want to go back and get boxing. I really miss the sport... Combat is truly my biggest passion in life.

I've learned Boxing from the internet one time, and then I got introduced to your videos.

I love your videos, amazing! Btw, I love the Slugger style, it looks cool and strong. I do self taught boxing since I have no boxing coach.

Hey, your videos are so well informed! I didn't really know what style my coach was teaching me, but when you mentioned the 3 range stances from the Puncher style i figured it out! My physique also matches the Puncher style perfectly. My coach also teaches a bunch of outboxing techniques, so we dont get hit as much as a normal puncher.

I've been wanting to get into boxing and your videos have helped me decide. Most videos on YouTube aren't real and don't make any sense but your's do. I've been fearful with how difficult it'd be to get into boxing but now I see that it must be pretty easy when you're used to it. Please keep up the good work! Your videos are awesome and helpful and I hope you get a sizable amount of subscribers and viewers! 🥊👍

I think my style would be a mix of outfighter and puncher. When sparring, shadowboxing or training with the others in my local boxing club i use both in and outfighting. I live in Norway, but my coach has taught me the best style to counter other norweagian boxers, not the norweagian style. I think watching this video really helped me find my style. Thanks a lot!

Great video, I've really been struggling with fitting a style to my stature. You've just perfectly explained where I need to hone in my style to suit me. Thanks. 🙏👍🥊

With all of what you said, Andrii, here's my thoughts on what I think my boxing style would be (IF I would be one cuz' I'm still a kid lol. Hey, I'm the guy from one of your recent shorts):

- For body type, I'm 128 pounds, have a pretty long reach in my opinion (I know since I suck at doing push-ups like all the other long-arm people), and I'm atleast an average height for my age.

- For my speed/power ratio, I can hit both fast and heavy punches with nice power.

- For my temperament, I usually doesn't want to be the aggressor and try to keep myself safe from punches while simultaneously looking for gaps and angles to throw my punches.

- For my boxing school, well... I'm just a regular kid using his dad's Youtube account who likes boxing, not a kid who devotes their entire life on boxing (Not me. I also really manga and watch anime). But, if I would guess, I would be in American or Vietnamese boxing schools, cuz' I'm from Vietnam (You can guess my username is Vietnamese), and I've been in America.

With all of these in mind, my best choice (For now) would be Out-fighter (I call it Out-boxer). These are just my thoughts, and, IF my fate/destiny would be a professional boxer one day, you can give any responses on what should I improve for my boxing style (Like should I add counterpunching? Should I use other strategies perfect for an Out-fighter? Should I use what I would call variations of each boxing style like the Soviet style for an Out-fighter? Etc.)

Thanks for reading this, Andrii. :)
