Look for the Motherboard Roundup videos from the Hardware Unboxed YouTube channel. Lots of great information in them.

Oh look, he's using my mobo as a cheap example. Lol.

Love my B650 tomahawk, glad to see it get some love here

I have the B650 Tomahawk, it rocks with my overclocked 7900X. One thing I love in this motherboard is that you can use all slots without any of them been disabled

The chapter ASRock board have 2 m.2 slots and vrms can easily handle 7700x with pbo(tested on my own PC). Other than that couple of details, great video.

Short answer made simple. Higher end mobos have better voltage regulation and temperature control allowing better performance.

Not much of a computer guy, but when I built a PC I came to understand components like engine parts: a CPU is like the rotating assembly, it's doing the actual work and should be selected for the workload so it's working hard enough without being stressed; RAM is like the intake and exhaust piping, it's not doing work directly but is "handling" the flow of energy/ information and also needs to be appropriately sized, and oversizing can be counterproductive in subtle technical ways; a GPU is like the transmission, it prepares the work being done in a usabke way for the human operator; and the motherboard is like the block, before you select any other component it decides several fundamental properties of the build and the total power you can expect to see.

The vrms are the most important aspect to any mobo

VRM is one of the things I knew to look for beyond the I/O and onboard slots.
One thing I wish was talked about more is the BIOS interface.

I have never in 23 years of pc building seen a lower end motherboard perform worse with the same CPU. Yes you will limit overclocking capability however it will not reduce the performance of the same cpu at stock settings.
Higher end motherboards come with more features and a more robust power delivery. That is all.

a 7 segment debug readout is always at the top of my list

One thing that is holding me back when thinking about building my own, is mobo selection and thermal paste, everything else seems pretty straight forward

Objectively speaking 2 ram slots is better than 4.
4 is unstable and/or reducing the maximum speed you can use and it has been shown that using 2 sticks while having 4 slots can slow down ram speeds through electrical interference from the empty slots.

Not super important mistake but it look's like the asrock b650 has 2 m.2 slot 1 under the pice port and one above. Still good video

a lot of mid tier boards will typically have around 14-18 of them which is solid. Any more than that and you should be looking to build a high end build to really take advantage of them

The problem with the VRM's is something I learned the hard way a few days ago.
Got the i9 11900KF from a good friend and used it with a B560 Steel Legend from Asrock. The VRM's didn't like that CPU at all.
Now I'm buying a X570 Gigabyte board together with a 32 GB Corsair kit from the same friend. 😂
