How To - Drive on German Roads

On the latest edition of Ask The Eagle we take a look at some basics of driving on German Roads.

Some major points to keep in mind are the Autobahn may have no speed limits in various parts of the country but the recommended limit is 130 km/h

The right of way can be tricky but if you remember that unless you're on a priority road anyone to your right has the right of way.

Also there are some spots that have signs that will tell you who goes first through a road and who doesn't. It's easy to know who goes first when you think about RED is in the WRONG.

Traffic circles may sound scary but they aren't bad, if you see a sign with arrows going in a circle the cars inside have the right of way. But if not then you do, and they have to yield.

If you have any questions please leave them in the comments below!

The sign at 1:52 (one red diagonal strip) DOES allow you to "park" there BUT you have to stay in the car or next to your car so you leave quickly. The other, very similar sign that forbids you to park AND even to stay there for 2min has TWO red diagonal stripes. One red stripe = "Halteverbot" Two red stripes = "Parkverbot"

The most important thing about the Autobahn that you must learn... is that the left lane is for OVERTAKING. Think of it as the toilet... You go in, you do what you do and then you get out. You don't sit there all day!

So don't hog it! It's very annoying to be doing 200+ kmh and have some idiot pop out and drive at 100kmh in the left lane!

If you're overtaken by a bus, you've been too slow! Germans would never let it happen!

0:21 There is no such thing as a recommended speed limit, its a recommended speed. as you can see being overtaken by a bus, you are going to slow. having the bus out on the fast lane because of you not sticking to the speed recommendation is a threat to faster drivers, that may crash into the traffic jam you are generating through this slow driving.

The recommendation (130km/h) is relevant for your insurance. If you have an accident and it's established that you were way faster then they might not pay the full amount, even if you were not at fault. The law indirectly states that you have to be "in control" and "able to react" at all times.

This applies only to the car insurance of course, healthcare is always provided.

Yes, they have. Nowadays, all vehicles in the circle have the right of way. You don't need the "Vorfahrt gewähren" sign anymore (the red triangle).

In my opinion your informations are not right. Parking in Germany is when you stop your car for more than 3 minutes BUT if you are leaving your car before the time is up your are parking right then. The sign you showed and the end is not the "parking forbidden" sign. The "parking forbidden" sign has two crossed red bars. There you are not allowed to park or even to stop. The sign you showed means that its not allowed to park, but allowed to stop for less then three minutes (if you are not leaving your car). Parking is really tricky in germany. Some of the signs not even a german does understand. when you enter a traffic circle you always have to give way, no matter if there is a sign or not. at least thats the way i learned it. and you do not use the direction signal when entering the circle but you need use direction signal when leaving it. please check your informations with a local driving school to give good and right informations to all the welcomed guests.

Sehr aufschlussreich. Jetzt weiß ich zu mindest mal wie ich fahren müsste, wenn ich mich an Regeln halten täte.

130 km/h is not a recommended speed LIMIT, it IS the recommended speed. :D most of the time there is no limit. and if there is one, it is set to 80, 100 or 130. ^^

Everything is right (I am from Germany) but if a bus is overtakeing you, you are doing something very very wrong. ;) Next time you have to be faster in Germany. ;)
