In today's Smart Home Protocols video, we are taking a look at the Thread protocol - what is Thread, how does it work and how does it work in our Smart Home? We also take at some of the things that makes Thread an improvement over Zigbee and Z-Wave, and if you should adopt Thread as part of your next Smart Home purchase!

What a fantastically precise and not overly technical explanation of Thread! You absolutely nailed this one!

Nice video and well explained. I totally agree Thread is still early days. But so far for me it’s been pretty good and stable

Great video the most comprehensive Thread video I've ever seen. I actually found a couple of things I did not know about & I've been following Thread for years. Great work thanks. Now roll on Matter release with the Unknown Admin

Thank you! That was a good breakdown of Thread. At least now I have a better understanding of it. 🙂

Great video again, I have just begun with my smart home so I'm still on WiFi only but will get more stuff and expand my life to other protocols. I think for now tho, that I'll let others try Thread. If the availability of Thread devices increases I will reassess my decision.

Hi new to your channel. Subscribed based on this video, and realised this is a series. Really well explained video. However you mentioned that you will do Matter protocol video. Any idea when will this be release ? looking forward. Thanks.

Thank you for your information. I wish you would have shown us the actual devices, so we have some visual examples of what you're talking about. In that way, we could see what the different devices looked like as you were talking about them. You explained the information so fast, without prompts, one did not have a chance to digest it. This information could have been two videos, with more detail of the individual processes. Hope this insight helps.

This video verbally mentions one disadvantage of "Thread": no hardware devices. However, this video does not show this as a CON on the comparison chart.
Searching on the internet:
> "Drawbacks or disadvantages of Thread Protocol
> ➨It does not support very high data rates unlike wifi.
> ➨It does not support very long range, unlike cellular wireless technologies.
> ➨Maximum number of devices (~ 250) supported are less than zigbee (~65560) .

Others comment that Zigbee devices, etc can eventually also work with the Thread protocol & devices.
Youtube pointed to one instructional production about Zigbee. However the real wireless range is only about 20-40 meters? Still very confused.

I'm very much waiting on Thread/Matter. I just hope that it doesn't get delayed again.

Hi sir. Your explanation video is very detailed and understandable. Thank you for the briefing. Can i know what connectivity is happening between Homepod Mini and Aqara M2 hub since homekit is Thread and Aqara is Zigbee 3.0? Im confused if their connection is through wifi. Thank you

Interesting video. Let's hope Thread devices are reasonably priced when there is a decent selection to chose from. At 20 to 50 USD per pop, I don't think I'll be throwing my existing devices in the bin any time soon.

as a matter of fact, this video is all that matters to understand matter.

This is helpful video thank you. Have a question: I currently have a SmartThings v2 hub which is my main hub for most of my device automations. The hub is Matter capable, but just not a Thread Border Router.

However, I already have 4 active Thread Border Routers (from Apple, Amazon, Google) and all my Matter-over-Thread devices still successfully connected to my ST V2 hub. The SmartThings hub is just not natively utilizing its own Thread network and relying on the one of the other four. Also aware of losing half the memory and processing speed upgrading to ST v3 hub.

My question would be if there are any advantages in having ST’s own Thread Border Router and network as I start building my Thread Network?

Maybe if it ain’t broke don’t fix??

Hi Lewis, very instructive as usual but, I need to confess that during nearly all the video I was focusing on... your moustache ! It become more and more long, take care not to eat it 😂.
Even if I know almost everything in your video, it's always a pleasure to watch them 👍.
I'm on the starting bloc for your next video on 'matter' but take care, the paint is so fresh 😜.
