As a portuguese I can totally understand that people without any specific connection to either Portugal or Brazil would learn first the brazilian version of portuguese. I believe it is a fairly hard language to learn (it depends of course on your background as well) as brazilian portuguese is more fluid and less strict. The open vowels also help a lot to understand and replicate the sounds. I love both accents and even though from this video it might not be clear, both languages are basically the same in terms of vocabulary and for the trained ear there is no problem communicating. I guess in Portugal we are just way more exposed to Brazilian culture than the other way around and that makes it hard for our brothers on the other side of the Atlantic. It is like a fellow american listening for the first time to a true brit, exact same thing.

That's funny, as a Brazilian living in Portugal I was also confused when they used "perceber" instead of "entender" because in Brazil "perceber" means " to notice". Even though it's the same language I still have a hard time understanding Portuguese people on the phone hahah

I’m Brazilian living in Portugal. At the beginning the accent is a big thing but when you get more contact with natives you get more comfortable with the accent and you can easily understand it!! Portuguese people are amazing!!

o português de Portugal é difícil pra nós brasileiros também, porque o sotaque é bem diferente. eles falam muito mais rápido que a gente e omitem vogais que pronunciamos. já um português entende um brasileiro facilmente, porque além da nossa pronúncia ser mais aberta e lenta (costumam dizer lá que aqui falamos "português com açúcar", haha), eles se expõem mais à nossa cultura. filmes, novelas, canais brasileiros etc. eu sofro pra entender pt-pt. mas tento :)
