I have a book that I write spawn coordinates and nether spawn coordinates, and everything I encounter...i.e. impressive caves, geodes, lush caves...
I always place my torches on the left hand side of tunnel caves so I know how to get out. Out is torches on the right. In is on the left. But, that works only in the smaller caves. The big ones get torches everywhere. I place 2-4 torches at an entrance so I can locate out once again.
I HATE GETTING LOST IN THESE CAVES!
I have coordinates written down for every world I have started...once again for everything.
Yeah...I can't remember any of that stuff.

BTW nowadays you're more likely to die from fall damage into a huge cave (or a mob horde down there if you survive the fall) than falling into lava while digging down

Another method is to use spectator mode to explore underground, geodes are plentiful and easily spotted this way. It's best to use a copy of your world because you need to activate cheats in order to use the command and you probably don't want to do that on the main version. This method is also great for other underground structures like ancient cities, mineshafts, lush caves etc

Amethyst geodes spawn more often under Y level 30. They fixed this a while back after 1.18

funnily enough, amethyst geodes were very common in 1.17 since there’s less for it to generate in and in my case they seem to spawn less naturally in caves so they’re easy to spot out.

In my current world, I found a mineshaft, 2 Geodes and a skeleton spawner all together, within a few chunks. I thought literally nothing of it until this very moment. Set up a skelly exp/mob drop farm and have the geodes growing at the same time? Kinda handy.

Still have never even found an Ancient City in any of my worlds. Haven't found a woodland mansion either and it's been a thing a lot longer. Or a lush cave for that matter... I'm to the point I think I will start using Chunkbase in the future, cause I'm tired of not being able to find these things.

I'm building an amethyst wall around my base; it's already eaten up hundreds of amethyst blocks and requires even more now I'm expanding it. Thank you for helping me get my amethyst geode needs met lol

I usually build my base on top of big caverns, i think I've got around 6 geodes within simulation distance of my bed.

They're impossible to find when you want one, so just concentrate on mining out a cave system instead and you'll find tons along the way.

I thought they nerfed ocean generation of geodes. I used to use the night vision trick all the time when 1.18 was new.

i've been playing no crafting table on my single player survival world for a few days now, with the exception of being able to use previously placed crafting tables once and then i have to burn them, and its been fun, its very challenging and you can even make potions without making your own brewing stand since there's one or 2 in the villages sometimes

Toycat how many people do you think you've inspired to create/keep long term worlds? Although not as long as yours I have a world that was created pre-nether update that I've enjoyed playing on the past few years and was inspired by you. (I also have a different world that doesn't get much use but was generated pre-Village & Pillage)
