Pattern Drafting for Beginners – Easy Basic Bodice Block • Elewa

As part of my pattern drafting for beginners series, I have created a tutorial on how you can draft your own bodice block/bodice sloper. I've tried to keep this tutorial simple, using as little body measurements as possible to create this sloper. The bodice incorporates the necessary wearing ease needed for the bodice to fit.

THIS BLOCK ISN'T AS PRECISE AS OTHER METHODS AND SHOULD ONLY BE USED FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS WHO WANT TO LEARN THE BASICS TO PATTERN DRAFTING.

************* PLEASE READ *************

A bodice block is used as a starting point for designing garments. Once you have a sloper that fits well, you'll be able to use it to make anything you want. This sloper can be used alongside my other tutorials, where you'll be able to learn a lot about pattern making.

This video does go quite quickly, so I suggest that you pause between each measurement so that you don't miss a thing. If you do have any questions, do let me know!

This tutorial is fantastic, I've used this along with your contouring tutorial to design a v-neck style bodice for my prom dress. However I made one small change. Following this tutorial the dart I ended up with was too close to the centre front. I would suggest to someone that has the same problem to measure from the highest point of one breast to the other, half that and mark that distance along the bust line from center front. Then you can use that mark as the point of your dart. Thats how I did it :) Thanks for the tutorial! Truly helpful :)

To every single person complaining, youre never going to find a pattern-making tutorial as explicit and accurate as this, , I can guarantee that no other free pattern will provide you with the size customisation freedom this video has. Even if it is a bit fast, stop complaining when theres literally the easiest change playback speed fix smh. This is literally fantastic

This is a wonderful tutorial! It's the most clear and concise instructions I've been able to find anywhere. I paused the video after each measurement and took a screenshot, so I can just flip through them when I'm making the pattern. Thank you!

Hi Elewa, I have just created my front and back slopers for the first time following your tutorial. I am not overly confident I had my measurements completely correct but I will make a toile and see how it fits. I struggled to follow either the video or blog post along, but with them both it worked so thanks for that extra work.

This is the best tutorial I’ve ever seen! I didn’t feel like anything was over my head or beyond my skill set. Definitely subscribing!

I liked this, simple and to the point. So many people complicate the issue and make it harder than it needs to be. Thank you.

For those of you who feel the video is too fast. Click the settings button under the video and change the speed to 0.5 or 0.25. Good luck!

Thanks for doing this series, I have been looking for something like this for a while. I always have problems with gaping arms and too big shoulder seams when using indie patterns so this will be really helpful, thanks!
