I'm learning how to draft patterns so you don't have to

One of the most common questions I get asked is where I get my patterns from. My most requested videos are how to draft patterns like I do.

Well I am going back to the basics and learning how to draft patterns from the experts, to make sure I'm not doing it all wrong. Then, I am going to take that knowledge and combine it with own my experience and to make tutorials on how to draft patterns.

In this video, I'm starting from scratch and following the professional's instructions to see how they differ from what I do.

Hey thanks for making these videos. Not enough resources for men’s sewing but it’s such an empowering activity.

Totally agree. When I first started sewing, I had the feeling of being totally inadequate, and nothing fit me. I needed a long long time to try again, and then bait of a shorter time to try it again. The more I sew, the more I try, the easier it gets, the better it fits, and the more I can understand what my sources like that exact patternmaking book even say. I guess taking apart garments and doing copies of hem is a great preparation, but nothing beats constructing a garment / fit block by yourself and realising it just fits.

I've had a go at making a few trousers after watching your videos... I haven't managed to make anything aside from what can only be described as medieval peasant rags so far but I'm getting better with each attempt.

I look forward to more of your videos on trouser making! There aren't nearly enough youtubers covering mens tailoring so it's great to see!

MINUS THE WAISTBAND!!!! OMG! This explains so much. I have drafted so many patterns, only to wind up with a droopy crotch situation. Minus the waistband... Sheesh! Genius...

That little detail you added at the end… wow. Quite informative. Thank you so much for sharing, that helps me immensely. I was wondering how you add fabric to the crotch curve and this solves it for me– thanks!

I am using the same book too. Very helpful book. It’s quite challenging for me since english is not my first language. But i learned a lot from that book 😇😇😇

I bought this book last year for my tailoring course, one thing I found was that some measures are off a bit (the waistcoat draft for example needs an extra 5cm minimum added in width and length) but it's a super useful resource especially when finding a drafting method that suits you. Love your videos as always.

Great video Mr. Quiring,

If you ever get the chance to would it be possible for you to make a 40s inspired trouser? The wide fit, high waisted yet very well fitting and not sloppy looking. I'm sorry it's so specific but I find myself wanting to sew my own vintage clothing because these repro brands are trying to charge an arm and a leg.

Thanks,

Julio.

I’m one of the many peeps who is partly responsible for Cornelius doing this. Thanks fellow lefty!! Oooohhhh, that purple fabric… I’m all about purple. 😃
Did you add any ease?

Literally bought this book a few weeks ago to try and learn how to make patterns. It's pretty straight forward as long as you have your measurements however I also found they need tiny tweaks; those curves are tricky for sure. My problem is that there are no instructions on how to sew all the pattern bits together or what order to sew them in. Do you have any book recommendations that would complement this one?
