1. you should have turned the wheel so that the nail is on top and away from vehicle, this gives you a better angle to do your work
2. you needed to go 2/3 in, Looks like you barely went half way in.
3. This doesn't necessarily have to be a temporary fix, I have driven years on a patched tire.

It is permanent if you do it right. Don't let the tire shop tell you otherwise. I work for a truck fleet, we only plug. Never had a single failure.

FYI, I plugged a tire once and then drove it to get it "patched" by a tire place. I went to 3 different tire places and none of them would patch a tire after you plug it with one of these. They would only offer to replace the tire at that point. Just a word of caution before deciding to use one of these plugs. Personally I've never had an issue with a plugged tire.

My local Firestone was unable to fix my tire because the nail was less than two inches from the outside edge of the tire, so he actually recommended this bad boy ... (this was two yrs, ago, and still no leak). I highly recommend. BTW, SLIME is the best one (at Menards and other places) ... I haven't heard good things about Home Depot's version.

I had nothing but plugs in my tires for years, never a problem.

I used this on a few different things and worked great

The glue in that kit is like Elmer’s glue. I remember kits having rubber cement.

If you scuff the tire by reaming it, if you put the glue on it. And you put that plug in right there is nothing wrong with it being permanent my suggestion would be to cut it right down to the tire next time because little tails like that will be the reason it fails it'll pull it back out

You're going to tell me you put that plug to the proper depth? You easily had an 1¾" at LEAST sticking out after pulling it out.
