Russia and China were not “old friends” during the Cold War. Far from it.

While China surely doesn't want Russia to lose the war with Ukraine, there is always the consolation prize that China could take from Russia's loss. China may decide to repossess the territories that once belonged to it, but are now under Russian control.

A bit of a miscalculation? How about 'a huge failure for trying to calculate'?

I’ve seen some of this fine, fine Chinese infrastructure in travels through Africa & Central Asia… absolute shambles. I’m sure that’s totally isolated & not at all reflective of their defense industry 😂

Land transport is only a fraction of the efficiency of sea transport. The USA, the UK, and Japan will never allow the PRC to become a naval power.

The most difficult part of an invasion is sustaining logistics to support the attacking force. It ranges from 26 to 30 miles from England to Europe. China to Taiwan is a little over 100 miles. Sustaining food, fuel, equipment and weapons over that long of a distance of ocean will be very difficult even if you have experience. We laid fuel lines across the channel to floating harbors we built and that was about 1/4 the distance China will have to traverse with fuel lines and that is just one of the many challenges they have to overcome.

The fact is that when someone chooses to, or in some cases chooses not to, do things that may be seen as having certain implications that if they were carried out the way that they were intended to. Then those things can come out in ways that they could perceive were things like when someone says that it could be that way
