James Sunderland has arrived in the town of Silent Hill, Maine after receiving a letter from his wife Mary, despite the fact that she died from a chronic disease three years ago. The letter claims that Mary is waiting for James in their "special place", which confuses James, as the whole town of Silent Hill was their "special place". Despite James wondering if the letter is a prank by someone with a twisted sense of humor, he notes that the letter is definitely written in Mary's handwriting and the author is aware James once made a promise to return to Silent Hill with Mary and that he never fulfilled this promise.

PH has one of the best introductions of any villain in any horror game ever. It's simple but effective. He's just standing on the other side of the bars glaring at James while the radio blares. He's not trying to harm him in that moment but his presence puts you ill at ease, especially considering he's disappeared when you return to that hallway.

It’s merely more terrifying that your first encounter with him is seeing him standing on the other side of the bars while your radio keeps making noises. And nothing happens, he won’t attack you, nor will he even move. He’ll just stand there and glare at you.
