For those who don't know, there is a random chance that this whispering will occur in this room. It can only happen once in the whole game and if you pass it and it doesn't happen, you have to start a new game for a chance to get it again. I played through the game for the first time on the original PS2 version and didn't get it. But I did get it on my second run. It sent such a horrifying chill up my spine that I switched off my PS2 out of fright and didn't play again for at least a few days.

I cannot name a single moment in any horror media that has ever given me such a visceral physical reaction than this moment. idk what it is about this moment but even as a grown ass man playing this game for the first time, it had me properly GOT to an unnatural degree

i came into SH series blind, played series without guides, etc. this moment is the most unsettling thing ever. comes out of nowhere. i was so unsettled by the apartments to begin with. the soundtrack, with the camera that made the apartments "breathe" as you go through them. playing with headphones, suddenly i come into this room. i swear the "whisper" came from behind me due to the engineering of the audio. lost my shit. never played a horror game that came so close to making me feel so uncomfortable, even the modern indie trend of cheap jumpscares. why i will always love and appreciate what Team Silent did, no matter what Konami does with the name Silent Hill.

Fun fact: the whispering here is a sample from The Nightingale Voice Box Collection and was not recorded by Team Silent or Konami. The file name is 'VB01_66_01_Whisper_Random' and you can still find it on their website under the Premier Collection Volume 1.

I've completed this game originally on the ps2 roughly 7-10 times and more recently on 360 HD collection 3 times and I have NEVER heard this.

This is why, for me, SH2 is the best video game I have ever played. I'm still finding subtleties in this game 12 years after its release.

They don't make horror games like this anymore...

To everyone wandering: It's a fx sound from The Nightingale Voice Box, which is a tool used in many games. It was used in the original and remake. It's the equivalent to Devil May Cry's Ancient Castle & RE4's Serenity which are borrowed from Pandora's Toolbox.
