The book Iron Giant has it's own dark backstory. It was written by Ted Hughes, the husband of Sylvia Plath, who committed suicide and left behind 2 children. He was abusive and had an affair with another poet, Assia Wevill who killed her 4 year old daughter and then herself. The original story was more fantastical but the plots are mostly the same, just more grounded in the movie. The book was written as a way to help his kids cope with their mothers suicide.

The weird thing about the Michael/Mike Myers thing is that the Michael Myers mask was a cheap William Shatner mask, not a specially designed prop for Halloween. I guess the way they doctored it for Halloween made it their thing that they had rights to, but I was still a bit surprised that the makers of Halloween had the power to grant or deny rights to William Shatner's face...
