Stopping the Panzers with Marc Milner (The Maple Leaf Route, Part II)

Historians have traditionally criticized the 3rd Canadian Division for its ‘slow’ progress after 6 June, for its failure to take Caen when it had a chance, and for succumbing to German counter-attacks and digging in on the Oak Line. But recent scholarship indicates that—Montgomery’s aspiration to get ashore and “crack about with tanks” notwithstanding—the Canadian role was to seize the Oak Line, dig in and kill the Panzer counter-attack on Operation Overlord itself.

We have certainly not forgotten the Canadians. Nor have we forgotten my grandfather's regiment The Royal Ulster Rifles. We just love you guys as we love our own.

I love Marc Milner’s presentation style. Wonderful speaker and brilliant scholar. The most Canadian Canadian ever. 😁

Excellent presentation. This needs to be seen by as many Canadians as possible, so they can go forth and proudly know what we did in Normandy.

1:22:00 Perfectly said. As bad as the Allied armies were, we won, and many times critical events were led by Canadians.

If the person who runs Canadian Military History reads this I want to ask him to do something with this video. The audio section is just about totally inaudible at times. But you can run the audio part of this video through your video editor's audio program and have it "normalize" the audio, which will bump up the amplitude of the entire audio track(s) and make it legible to people's ears. Much too often the person speaking is running out of breath and allowing what they are saying to disappear into inaudibility. This is due to whoever is speaking, and it is everyone actually, not having bothered to take some voice lessons where they will teach you not to allow yourself to get into a place where you run out of sufficient breath to audibly say what you have to say. This is no doubt getting a bit redundant by now on my part but I don't know if I can count the number of times I've come across this on YouTube. People doing narrations on videos who just don't even keep in mind that you _cannot_ allow yourself to get down to whisper level speaking when narrating or giving interviews for videos or even just radio-types of interviews. This is what it is to be professional in what you are doing. You have to do it right or your efforts are wasted. Anyway, please "normalize" all of the audio tracks and then re-post this video.

BTW, this is an excellent interview and should be watched by anyone who takes an interest in the Normandy campaign. 👌😉👍

Some people question the presence of Panzer Lehr at Putot in the Canadian sector. They believe that Panzer Lehr only operated in the Gold beach region. Is there hard evidence that they were actually at Putot?

Very nice presentation, from Op Jubilee to Ex Pirate, Canadians were instrumental to the planning of OVERLORD (Neptune) in combined operations that helped define technics and movement of the attacking forces. Army HQ report 42 is detailed about planning and follow-on operations, interesting read for those interested in planning phases for an operation. Cheers

Thank you for this I have always wanted to know how the Canadian troops were chosen for for Operation Overloed. It was a bit of mysteries too me because of active role we took in WW1.

Maybe the best or at least most interesting one in this summer series of webinars. Marc has a natural and honest way of presenting his story adding his personal feelings to it. Funny sometimes. I kind of missed his book in 2017 but was able to purchase a copy three months ago.

Great presentation on the Canadian Army contribution on the D Day and the days after, very much appreciate the sacrifice of the Canadian in securing our current freedoms.

When did Brigade 7 and Brigade 9 land in France to blunt the Panzer groups moving over to Normandy?
