In Invincible the Viltrum Empire has conquered many planets... but why?

I think the biggest reason is thragg taking over. Nolan's family line was actually really peaceful.

I always imagined it as a mix between genetics and mental state. They have insane growth in physical / combat strength, and I’m willing to bet that they’re similar to Saiyans in that their genetics make them naturally inclined to combat.

At the same time, their lifespans mean that not only will experience thousands of years and possibly thousands more (meaning that the average viltrumite would probably see nearly everything in the universe), but they’ll witness thousands, if not millions of deaths throughout their lifespan, and thus will witness the ‘reasons’ for their empire. Even if their conquest is rooted in the selfish desire for combat, they’ll reason it with “If we intervene, we can make everything better. Even if thousands or millions of people have to die, we’ll witness billions of happy (albeit oppressed) lives.”

It reminds me of a show or story can't remember which about a guy who died, and thought he went to heaven. He got everything he ever wanted, any woman, won every gamble he took, had every drink food clothing car anything at all he could ever dream of was his. He eventually got depressed because nothing was fun anymore, he couldn't lose and had everything he wanted handed to him without having to earn it, he found out he was actually in hell, not heaven.

Viltermites aren’t conflict driven by nature but the problem was that during a change of power between kings their general while trying to find the new heir to the throne decided to start a survival of the fittest campaign which kills all the weaker more subservient population who would be more inclined to side with peace and prosperity by more peaceful means. This in turn well leaves the others who did survive more inclined to militarism and domination of others than those who unfortunately didn’t.

Makes sense. We done experiments with giving animals Utopian conditions... they always end up creating a self imposed literal nightmare ending in all their deaths to feel something.
