The space program now is only 0.5% of gdp, compared to almost 4% during the Apollo era. You cannot be serious about beating anyone into space with this kind of budget.

Americas rockets don’t dump toxic chemicals near villages like the Chinese ones

It's not USA Vs China, It's Elon musk Vs China.

If it wasn't for Musk, there wouldn't be a US space program to other moons and planets. The FAA just doesn't seem keen to allow SpaceX to develop quickly enough. Thus allowing others to try and catch up.

What race? China lost this "race" 50 years ago.

Next we will have a race to invent the light bulb.

Spacex and nasa rockets don’t have metal panels falling off them when they take off.

The situation will propably look almost the same like during cold war. Soviets launched first man into space, so USA suddenly woke up, and decided to show off by landing on moon. So to USA to move themselves, actually China needs to land first man on moon since 52 years, and then USA will do the same, but this time will make permament colony to assure their superiority, and come into stagnation again

"China's space programme is far more advanced than most people realise." - Elon Musk

There is a difference between just landing on the moon and establishing a settlement and base there. The two countries are aiming for very different scopes. China is essentially doing what the Apollo missions did.

China will probably get humans on the moon be the USA. Now which country can maintain a continuous presence on the moon would be the better question.

I think its also different goals.
USA isnt going to the moon to simply put a man on it, they are going to setup bases, basically to stay.
Although China has similar goals, with a much smaller rocket, moon bases might be more of a long term goal.

They don't care about the human cost.

Chinas space program might be static for a moment, but then it takes off unexpectedly.

According to Google...
"The last time a US spacecraft landed on the moon was December 19, 1972, as part of NASA's Apollo 17 mission. The mission's crew, which included astronauts Eugene A. Cernan and Harrison H. Schmitt, landed in the Taurus-Littrow highlands and valley area."

Even if we are a bit later than them. Starship will be able to launch so much mass that we could catch up with one delivery.

Artemis is primarily a giant boondoggle.

Once Starship becomes reliable, Musk should just go ahead, put one "tanker" Starship in orbit around the Earth, another in orbit around the moon, and then land on the moon using his Lunar Lander Starship, just to show NASA how it *can* be done.

Then he could build a second "Gateway To Mars".

So maybe China pops a moon lander off before the US.. that's fine.. they are building a Mazda Miata.. we are building a SEMI truck

China has to wait for space-x to do it first! They ate good at copies. So they only have Xrox rockets.

It isn't really a race if they're choosing to use last generation technology non.Reusability and taking extreme risks
