God is Dead: Nietzsche

In this video I explain what Nietzsche meant when he said God is dead and what this entails for us. This phrase comes up in many of his works but I focused on it's usage in The Gay Science. If we consider the history of philosophy and the results of the enlightenment, we come to see the death of God as the death of an ideal, a transcendent ideal that provided answers on meaning, values, morality, etc. This makes the death of God more of a psychological phenomenon rather than a physical one.

Great video! Currently reading The Gay Science by W. Kaufmann - it's excellent. He talks about filling this 'void' with the what he calls "the greatest weight", the eternal recurrence. What's interesting is that Nietzsche himself was terrified of this notion, as he was devastingly sick and in constant pain while writing Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but came to embrace it striving for the overman. He expressed this in his notes:

"I do not want life again. How did I endure it? Creating. What makes me stand the sight of it? The vision of the overman who affirms life. I have tried to affirm it myself - alas!"

For me, it definitely sounded like a regretful tone. Before the so-called death of God, people had a choice to believe in God, but now that the world is more scientifically driven, it becomes much harder to have faith and more easily to be nihilistic. There's no more choice, no more escape. Of course, this is my humble idea, I don't study philosophy much myself.

A lot of people seem to fill that void with alcohol and superficial entertainment. Not really the kind of replacement that lifts a society to higher levels.

You can just read the Prima Pars of the summa. The other parts are specifically on Catholicism, while the Prima Pars is more of a work on Natural theology.

If you wanna learn about the scholastic view on virtue, vice, and man’s goals read on to the Prima Secundae. It’s great!!

Your saying that belief in God filled a void for meaning, answered ultimate questions, provided security and now "God is don't think we have found anything that could replace God, certainly not the Ubermensch, not the Eternal Recurrence, and certainly not the myriad if ways people try to create there own meanings to fill the Void.

If you are interested in scholastic philosophy a few good books introductory books are:

Aquinas: a beginner’s guide - Edward Feser
Aquinas: the dumb ox - GK Chester
Five Proofs for The Existence of God - Edward Feser
God and the problem of Evil - Father Brian Davies
The Summa of the Summa - Peter Kreeft
Compendium of Theology - Thomas Aquinas

Nietzsche was not an atheist. He called himself an "Honest Pagan". Nietzsche inverted all concepts, philosophies, and religious concepts to hold up the other end of the Rorschach test. Anyone quoting Nietzsche does not seem to understand that the quote says more about themselves than it says about Nietzsche.

People tend to fill there voids through Hedonism, Nihilism, humanism which leads towards further degradation of the society as a whole since everyone becomes less sophisticated and more regressive. Mankind will reach a less developed state and more than likely accept things like being slaves again because they do not know the meaning of life or the purpose of life so they allow other humans to tell them what there purpose is. This is why having a God is extremely important.

Hume actually makes man's epistomology questionable. Hume could not make the inference of morality from the source, which Nagel picked up on.
If anything, Van Til picked up on this from his readings of Aquinas. Hume merely exposed the fallacy of self-epistomology (better known as standpoint epistomology).

Why would you need to fill the void?Accept its existence and go forward with it, until the day you die and become what you were before your birth.
