So unfortunate that the Apple TV still isn’t doing HDMI audio pass through. It’s it’s single biggest flaw. I have to keep an Nvidia Shield TV Pro just for steaming from my Plex server and actually enjoy uncompressed Dolby TruHD or DTS Master Audio.

Will be picking up the 128G model. Happy to see the A15 chip. I use my Apple TV 4K a LOT! Thank You for the heads up!

Apparently the little box might offer dynamic tone mapping which could be a real bonus for a lot of projector owners who don't have a jvc

why can't they put 120 fps compatibility, games would be fun with that many tvs do support 120 fps nowdays

Something that i'm picking up on is the A15 chip. This is a bit of a tell sign because the A15 is the first chip to work with ProRes! This tells me that Apple COULD if they wanted stream iTunes / Apple TV+ in say ProRes422 Lite. That would be a good 200mbps. It's their Codec. Never say never, this is Apple remember. Just look at Apple Music - not just CD quality lossless BUT the options for 24 bit 48, 96 and 192 and Dolby Atmos. Something tells me that in time, this could be a total game changer. With reliable, fast, unlimited broadband in European cities of 200, 500 and 900 mbps, a 200mbps stream is perfectly doable. Watch this space :)

I wonder if it still supports only two Bluetooth connections at the same time.

Thanks for the great content! It would be great if you could do a recommended AppleTV settings video (for projector and for oled) once you get them in!

What about HDR10+? Will my LG utiize that format at all?

This was enough to move me away from Roku. Ordered the $149 version. I always go wired if possible.

I'm glad you talked about this because they still haven't add lossless audio which I'm kind of upset

I am excited about this. I have an apple tv 4k gen 1, and I am not currently able to get Imax enhanced. Do you have an idea if this will support imax enhanced format?

To the people complaining about iterative updates to hardware. I JUST DON’T GET IT! Think of it like this. What if apple just updated the box every 4 years and always used a 1-2 yr old processor at the time and you bought your first AppleTV 3 years in now with a 5 year old processor and you keep that thing for a while. 2 years into ownership you have a 7 year old iPhone processor. Your kids now enjoy Arcade and you already had Arcade for free but it runs like crap. Now your half way through the next AppleTV cycle already. You can buy a half way out dated AppleTV again and essentially be in the same exact scenario again in a few years when the best games for the best iPhone are too difficult to run on 5-7 year old processor or you wait even longer.

Wouldn’t you just rather know that Apple just keeps updating the specs regularly and just buy yourself the box when you feel like it’s time and not have to worry about cycles. I bought my 2017 4K in early 2020 so yeh when the new version came out it was a little bummed but I needed the other one when I bought it. If Apple had been updating their product yearly I wouldn't have had a 4 year old AppleTV with a 5-6yr old processor.

What people also don't realize is that maybe Apple needed to do this to phase out old silicone. It actually might cost them the same amount to make or even less. Why would they give customers old crap like that.

I still think an AppleTV stick is possible. They could utilize lower end silicone on that if necessary. Or maybe they just don't see the benefit of a $60 stick when you can already get that and download

The only reason I'll buy this is because I had Apple 4K on my projector and Shield in my bedroom but now I want to use the Shield for Plex transcoding ONLY because it’s cheaper than upgrading my real server to handle the on the fly transcoding and saves enough money in electricity to cover the cost of a new AppleTV.

But I’ve been using my XBOX on the projector lately and I’m fine with that for now.

I’m going to hold out for a bit. Because that’s my choice. I’ll probably get this thing just so I have the same unit in both rooms.

It’s a must for the bedroom because of AirPods and head tracking. But I use that in the living room occasionally and you don’t get head tracking when you go and plug headphones into your Xbox controller. Head tracking with Atmos is amazing too.

It will be nice knowing that I have the latest greatest hardware when I get it and knowing that I’ll get 5-6 years out of it for sure (however long it’s updated for) because if I replace it in the projector room it would move to the bedroom to replace the oldest AppleTV or maybe by then we have an AppleTV that my daughter uses on a normal TV (we only have a projector and our bedroom TV now).

Anyways this is good news!

I don’t see a reason to upgrade from my Apple TV 4K 2021 picked up for 100 bucks on sale. Use it for streaming on my Sony not for gaming.

I love the AppleTv, It’s my only viewing device…no cable, no sat, just pure streaming. I watch 12 hours a day while working from home. I have the 2021 version with the beta updates. So far having an LG tv the new one won’t make a noticeable difference since it doesn’t support hdr10+, my LG has dolby vision and hdr10, I also have a 7.2.4 setup for atmos, so nothing updated there. i don’t have a problem with anything with my current setup. I will wait for something new later.

Might have to buy my first Apple TV device! Keep hearing great things about it! Do you know if it will be able to send an Atmos signal via Bluetooth to AirPods Max? Might help watch movies with the kids sleeping!
